History

Established in 1983.

Montclair Construction started as a family business in the fall of 1983 in the charming district of Oakland, California known as Montclair. Success and growth evolved the company into incorporation in 1999, and for over 30 years we have been refining our ability to take clients from concept to completion on a wide variety of projects.

Our Design & Build team combines remodeling and new custom home building experience. We are well-​known for the outstanding quality of our work, fair pricing, attention to detail and dedication to our homeowners’ satisfaction. Montclair craftsmen are skilled tradesmen and among the finest in the area. With 3 experienced estimators, we cover a broad Bay Area expanse, there is never a charge for us to come talk with you, to review your project.

Manager

Carlo Khatchi, founder and principal of the company, grew up in the construction field; his father was a carpenter. Carlo majored in General Engineering at San Francisco State University and the University of San Francisco. «What I like about this business is meeting people and developing the systematic plan to transform their dreams into reality. It becomes a highly creative process and the satisfaction is great on both sides when the job is completed well.»

The Montclair Construction crew was super: knowledgeable, efficient, and meticulous. Tom and Justin make a great team: they work well together and kept our house accessible and functional during construction.
We had them do major structural repairs: foundation work, replacement of exterior stairs, gutter and soffit work on the roof, and re-​working of drainage along the sides of the house. Window and door replacement, too. Truly fine craftsmanship, rebuilding the front door frame and threshold!
Robert handled contract details and was flexible when scheduling issues came up. Very professional. I’ll definitely call on them again when I’m ready to tackle the next project! I trust them. So grateful for the beautiful work they’ve done!

Had Robert Jarratt out for a site visit to diagnose a couple of water issues in our new house. He was really helpful; he gave us a bunch of good advice, not just on the projects I was asking about, but also on a couple of other issues that he saw. And, not just advice to get work for his company; he pointed out what we could do on our own easily to save money. He even spent an extra 15 minutes helping me make sure that our sump pump was working, which I had been unable to do on my own. After the visit, Robert promptly sent over a work proposal. This is in stark contrast to our experience with other contractors, who took weeks to schedule a visit and then failed to follow up. Highly recommend calling Montclair Construction if you have project needs!

After seeing that we were not happy with our first experience with Montclair Construction, Carlo contacted us to talk about what happened and try to reach a middle ground. They ended up giving us a construction credit for half of the price we originally paid and were very accommodating on working with us to get the construction taken care of. In an industry that generally lacks acceptable customer service, I have been pleasantly surprised by Montclair. Thanks for paying attention to your customers!

I really like doing business with Montclair construction. I feel they give me honest competitive bids, schedule the work in a timely manner, and complete the work as agreed upon. The last job they did for me (they have done several), I was not happy with the cleanup job and they were there instantly to remedy the problem.

They have done two projects for us – and we are very happy with both. They replaced a French drain, then came back to repair framing and stucco that had water damage. They worked with us to find the best solution and were flexible about how to do the project right (and fit a budget.) We appreciate the personal touch, phone calls and check-​ins from the sales team. Both work crews have been terrific to have around — the leave the place better than they found it. We had one electrical issue after a project, and they sent an electrician immediately to fix it – and someone to fix the hole he made in the process. Great follow-​up and attention to detail. Can’t wait for them to do the kitchen!

I met with Robert Jarratt yesterday about leaks and water issues in our San Francisco basement. I was incredibly impressed by his experience, skills and observations. He noticed a number of potential causes of our issues and was the first to recommend doing a ‘leak test’ before creating a plan to address the issues (not something complex… just a worker with a hose and another observing). Seems simple but no one else suggested.
In the end we’re not working together (and I’m bummed by that because I have confidence they would have done a great job!). They are in Oakland and we are in San Francisco and for our size job it dod not make economic sense on either end. But if we had a bigger project or were in Oakland we would not hesitate for a moment to work together.

Montclair Construction has completed two separate projects for us on our 100 year-​old house in Oakland during the past two years. Both projects were relatively small, under $ 6,000 each, which some companies don’t really want to deal with. Montclair Construction was happy to bid on our jobs, gave reasonable estimates, and completed the jobs efficiently and quickly. They cleaned up after the jobs. One job involved their employees working on a high scaffold to remove and replace rotted wood. They worked carefully and safely, were polite and informative when we asked about the progress of the job, were hard working and did excellent quality work. We would recommend them for jobs large and small.

Overall I give high marks to Carlo and his team for solving a difficult and urgent basement water leak issue we faced. Exterior sourced water was penetrating our old brick foundation wall and there was no way to access the wall from the outside perimeter due to adjacent properties. Montclair quickly performed investigative work on the wall and developed an innovative solution to remediate the wall from inside the house. This involved removal of dry wall, installing a new subterranean French drain and drain paneling, and erecting a new rebar and shotcrete structural wall.
Finish work included HVAC modification and reinstallation, replacement of dry wall and baseboards, electrical conduit relocation, plumbing repairs, new shelving, new tile floor, repainting and cleanup.
All work was completed in an expeditious manner and there was regular communication from the project estimator and the company scheduler. The price for the work was competitive and there were minimal change orders. The few pricing and invoicing disputes that arose were resolved quickly and fairly. We encountered a number of contractor work teams and they were invariably skilled, professional and courteous, with a high level of teamwork amongst themselves. Items requiring rework or a third party specialist contractor were minimal. Site cleanup was performed daily and thoroughly at the end of the project.
I would highly recommend Montclair for future structural and drainage projects, and for installation of tile floors.

Just called for my client/​seller to see if we could get a foundation repair estimate on an upcoming listing and I was told they were too busy for work like an inspection & they don’t do that anyway! To give her a chance to come across in a more warm (wanting my business in the future) manner, I told her that did not come off too kindly but she still did not try and just hung up. As a Realtor, I try to provide good customer service to all because you never know if a small project can end up to be a big project or referrals to come. She was not a great representation of this company.

We had Montclair Construction replace a failing wooden retaining wall with structural concrete including a number of helical piles. They also secured three existing porch piers and added three more for any future extension possibilities. This project was a 60-​foot retaining wall that entailed removing the existing 40-​foot wall, digging a trench for footings, constructing the forms for the wall and driving piles about 15 feet deep into the ground to help stabilize then entire project. This was a very experienced crew that was extraordinary to watch develop and finish the project (that took three weeks). For this sort of work, I highly recommend Montclair.

We used Montclair Construction for several sequential projects in spring 2015 and were very happy with each one; that’s why we hired them again. From building and strengthening retaining walls against intruding soil, to replacing siding, to cement repair, to gate repair and door installation, every job was promptly quoted, then performed expertly and timely completed. I greatly appreciated the willingness of each team of workers to attend to details that I wanted done when I pointed them out. It really did feel like they wanted me to be satisfied! And I am.

I’m bumping up my review based on the professional manner in which my complaint was followed up. I think my project may have fallen through the cracks in this case, which is something that can happen from time to time. It’s not enough for me to consider hiring them, but I do think that they would be capable of doing the work, had we not gotten off on the wrong foot.

We recently (Spring 2015) worked with Montclair Construction for french drain, complex water diversion problems and foundation work, and we think they were great. The owner, Carlo, came over at night with a flash light to look at the project and gave us an estimate. His crew were very professional and most of them have worked with Carlo for many years, which I believe is a testament to the quality of people there. We found some surprises during the project, and Carlo worked with me on the price. We would hire them again in a heartbeat.

First a little background… I had hired another contractor to remodel my basement and at the first rain it flooded. Instead of fixing the issue, they left me fending for myself and looking for someone else to do the work.
After months of looking for a contractor to fix the flooding, I came upon Montclair Construction. They reviewed the work done by the other contractor and showed me what was done wrong. They came up with a very reasonable bid and were able to do the work quickly.
I wish I had known about Montclair Construction prior to doing the work downstairs since the guys I originally hired obviously didn’t know what they were doing when it came to drainage. Between sealing the floor that I had done based on Montclair’s recommendation, having Carlo from Montclair fill the concrete where there was a big gap between the old and new foundation left by my old contractor, and installing the sump pump that Robert from Montclair designed, we fixed any drainage issues that were not properly done the first time.
Turns out they finished the project just in time as we got a good amount of rain just after. The great news is that NO water got into the basement after the work they did. So, I must give them a super big thank you! It is good to know there are still contractors you can count on.

An excellent experience all around on our foundation work from estimate to the signing off of the permit. I really liked that when they came to do the estimate, they were not selling themselves, but just talking about what needed to be done.
Hardworking, polite, good communication, tidy, excellent construction of new piers under a house on a steep hill. Highly recommend. We will be hiring them again.
3÷31÷15 UPDATE: We have rehired them to replace our sidewalk, retaining walls and front concrete stairs as well as add drainage behind the house. Having another excellent experience with their hardworking and courteous team.

Montclair Construction has been doing work for us for years. We have always be satisfied with the work and their trained professionals. Recently, we had decks and a kitchen floor installed and the experience was again painless. Foreman Tom Connelly and his crew were prompt, attentive, and clean. Crew chief Connelly was instrumental in insuring the job was completed professionally and on time.
What I appreciated most is how Tom kept us informed of the job’s process and modification that might be necessary. Some of the supplies I had purchased were the wrong size. Once notified, he was able to organize an efficient work around. The job came in on time, exceeding my own expectations.

The team kept our tiny lawn clean during the project — that was kind of a miracle.
My husband was a contractor so he picks good contractors to work with. They do high quality work and I trust them for stuff we could never do ourselves.
