North Portland Bike Works

I really enjoyed my visit to North Portland Bike works. I have the Chinook Book which had an offer for a discounted Tune up in there. I called to make an appointment and they asked if I could bring the bike in so that they could see what needed to be done. My husband and I brought both of our bikes and they looked them over right away. They actually told me that my bike didn’t need a tune up! Just a front dérailleur adjustment and fixed it right then and there. They also made great suggestions and helped fix my bottle cage while just talking with us. We could tell that they really love bikes and are really helpful. My husband’s bike needed a lot more work (which we knew) and is scheduled for a tune up and because he has a back issue they advised to get a different handle bar setup which we think is a great idea and are going to do. I’ll provide an update after that happens! Also, we are just regular leisure bike riders with cruiser style bikes and they didn’t make us feel uncomfortable in our lack of biking experience or knowledge.

These guys don’t upsell you. Very real and very efficient. They will be my mew go to. Bike repair, bike sales and equipment sales. I only got the repair but when looking around the sale prices looked reasonable too.

I bought a nice Linus bike from Skyler and I feel like the whole shop got excited for me. Everyone at NPBW is really cool, supportive and enthusiastic. I visited every bike shop in the NE PDX area and this was my favorite.

Came here for a tuneup and to my surprise I didn’t need one! The staff was helpful and gave me some good advice on taking care of my bike for the next few months before it was time for a tuneup. They also replaced my odometer battery which I was really happy about and it didn’t cost much either. Nothing worth 5 stars but a solid 4 — I’ll be back!

My favorite bike shop ever. if it can be called just that. I was so lucky to have lived a stone’s throw away from this place. Bought a couple bikes here and despite the abuse I put these bikes through, the folks at nopo bike works have always come through with affordable repairs. While I’ve always been a bit timid about using their wrenching station, I got a few pointers regarding brake adjustment and even wheel truing. since moving to LA, I realized just how tough an act nopo bike works is to follow.

Everyone who helped me at North Portland bike works was notably professional, attentive, and helpful. They worked with me to get the most bang for my buck to improve my bicycle on a budget. I had to wait for their availability a few days, but it was totally worth it. The day of my appointment my bike was in and out promptly, and now it rides like new. I will definitely be a return customer because this seems like a shop that values customer service first.

Alex was so helpful setting me up that I felt inclined to message while in the shop to tell the world about it. Very approachable and patient! I highly recommend coming in if you’re in the market!

I just bought a $ 500+ brand new bike from this store only for it to fall apart after riding it for less than 5 minutes. The chain completely fell off and I almost crashed. If this had happened in a busy intersection, it could have been dangerous. I had to carry the bike to another store which charged me $ 100 for the repairs. The staff seemed very nice and helpful but the products that they sell are garbage. Please don’t shop here.

Charged me 6 $ to put on a new tire on when I didn’t ask for it (putting a tire on rim takes 15 seconds) when I bought the tire. Was not happy about the bogus charge.

Super friendly and helpful staff. I dropped my bike off one morning to have fenders added and they were able to get it finished the same day. The staff was able to clearly explain my different options so I could find the best fit for my needs. Not on my usual bike route, but it would definitely go back.

Still my favorite bike shop in town. If something major breaks when I’m on the other side of town, I’ll often bus it all the way over to North Portland Bike Works just so I don’t have to go to a shop I like less. When I get the bill for service, it’s often half the price I would pay at a Bike Gallery or the like.
Work is solid, the shop is well staffed so they never have a hugely-​long wait, even for major service. They also have a nice stock of parts, again cutting down on the maintenance time.
Also they’re more careful when doing service: they’re the only shop where I’ve never had something turn out to be broken again the next day.
The staff is friendly, and they’re always happy to tell you if another shop is more likely to have the thing you want. However, they stock some of the best new bike types, so if you’re looking for a first bike or a new bike, start here!

Just bought a Linus bike from here and the service was amazing! I would definitely recommend this bike shop if you are in the market for a Linus bike. The staff was patient and did not feel pushy at all. They wanted to make sure I was 100% satisfied with my new bike before I left and I was! Skyler was who helped us the most but all of the staff was friendly.

I stopped in last Sunday at the North Portland Bike Works, when a Sale sign lured me in. They were offering 30% selected clothing including some pretty spiffy rain gear. The place has a very nice community bike store vibe, with a Berkeley touch. They also sell new & used bikes, parts and accessories, and operate a full-​service repair shop.

I’m new to north Portland and I’ve decided to make biking instead of driving one of my goals for the summer. I’ve been into North Portland Bike Works three times now for little things, including having a new tire put on, and this place is awesome. GREAT vibe. A lot of bike shops make me feel weird because I have a small bike with a basket and I hardly know anything about bikes, but everyone here has been super nice and not pretentious. On my last visit one of the employees invited me to the Women and Trans bike night to learn more about my bike and I’m totally going to go. Instead of just fixing my bike, they offered to SHOW ME HOW TO FIX IT! Love it.

Superbly friendly and helpful staff. I just moved up here from SD/​SF and I brought my bike with me, naturally. I didn’t have a fender, and they had four different styles. I was explained in detail the differences between all of them to make an informed decision. No sales tax is definitely a plus. Ended up getting the small Planet Bike fender for $ 42. I’m really happy I decided to pop into the store. They don’t have a wide selection of bicycles, mainly on the lower end, but they know their stuff and definitely will be coming back if I need more bike gear while I’m up here.

I bought my bike for about $ 1800 five years ago from River City. In the meantime, I’ve had amazing experiences with their service staff and the service staff at several Bike Gallery locations (all for small things). So when my friend asked me why I was taking my bike to North Portland Bike Works (having never been there) for it’s first major overhaul and tune, I didn’t have a better answer than wanting to see what other shops had to offer. Mind you, my friend was asking me because she knows how important my bike is to me and how easily I find fault and disappointment in people at places like this.
But everything worked out perfectly. Fine folks here at NPBW. They were responsive, fairly priced, friendly, and seemed like they were actually excited to work on my bike and thankful that I brought it to them. In the end, everything runs smoothly, follow up service has been even better than the original service, and I could not be more pleased.
Luckily for all of us in Portland, we have no shortage of good shops for our bikes. But from someone that is incredibly demanding when I fork over money, I will say: Trust in NPBW and you won’t be disappointed.

I just moved from Michigan to Portland and I had my bike shipped to me and didn’t have all the tools necessary, so I called around to a few bike shops in my neighborhood and the closest one was going to charge me 50 dollars to help me put it back together, I went to npbw on a chance that they wouldn’t charge me as much and he helped me on the spot and only charged me 16 dollars. SO AWESOME. They were very friendly and I would recommend this shop to anyone. He even told me to come back and visit soon on my way out. I love this town.

I just moved to Portland and sold my bike in Philly before I left because it was kind of crappy and it wouldn’t fit anyway. While I was job hunting in Portland I spied an awesome used mountain bike at their daily outdoor used bike display. I walked by it everyday, dreaming and hoping it wouldn’t be gone before I could afford it. It was kind of pricey I thought for used bike, but it was a gem.
The day finally came when I could buy it. I met Kim, who was so nice! She was covered in bike grease and had this hilarious, awesome, totally unintentional bike grease mustache on her face. She was just so genuinely enthusiastic about her work, it beamed from her. She was wary that the bike was just a little too big for me and cautioned me against buying it because she didn’t want me to be uncomfortable. I was really impressed by that, but I was totally smitten by the bike and just had to have it.
I rode my bike all over and it was awesome! Then minor tragedy befell us and I got a nail stuck in the tire. I took the bike back to the shop and they fixed it in 20 minutes, and sweetly didn’t charge me labor, only the tube.
Then major tragedy struck! I got caught in a trolley track and wrecked big time. My chain popped off and I put it on as best I could but I totally screwed up my beautiful, amazing bike. I took it back to the shop and Kim tightened up my cable in about two seconds, no charge.
However, something still wasn’t totally right, so it was a perfect excuse to take it to the amazing weekly women and trans* community bike repair night! How awesome! I fixed my bike under the guidance of the extremely knowledgeable Bob, and my bike is back to purring like a brand new kitten.
Philly had left me with a bad taste in my mouth for bike shops. I’d run into a lot of grumpy, pretentious shops that weren’t necessary kind to folks who don’t know much about bikes.
North Portland bike works is the bike shop of my dreams. They are kind and welcoming and genuinely want you to enjoy biking. They might be just a little pricier than some can comfortably afford, but it’s worth it because of all the added bonuses you get that are so rare. I also think it is an investment to have this kind of space in the community!

I love North Portland Bike Works! I live nearby the shop and it’s so nice to have them within walking distance.
I don’t know anything about bikes except that I like my bike a lot and I ride it a fair amount. I’ve gone in to see them a few times now and they’ve been really helpful. I just bought a new used bike and brought it in to have them check it out. Other bike stores I’ve been to have always tried to sell me a bunch of stuff I don’t need — but not here. They give honest recommendations and aren’t just trying to make money off of you. They’ll even tell you how to do stuff on your own so you don’t have to pay them to do it! They are a non-​profit, after all. They even said I could have left the store without buying anything at all!
On top of all that they aren’t elitist at all and don’t look down on anyone for being a less than knowledgeable, casual biker. Highly recommended!

I am very pleased with this place.
I had been looking for a new back wheel (hub, spokes, rim) for my mountain bike turned commuter and I didn’t really feel a deep need to pay an arm and a leg. I went to a few other shops and got answers anywhere from a couple hundred or more to «you really ought to have a wheel built for that.» Seeing how this is not a high-​class racing bike and how the stock 32-​spoke wheel did JUST FINE for a little over 15 years, all I really wanted was a slightly beefier 36-​spoke wheel/​hub/​rim.
This place ordered one for me and had it soon. I was out of town when it came in and they said no problem, just stop by when you get back. I took my bike to the shop. The wheel looked great and spun true. It was a no-​nonsense commuter grade wheel that will likely last for years to come. They put it on including rim tape, swapping tube/​tire, and adjusting the dérailleur and got it going for me.
I test rode it an in less than one turn around the block I had a blow-​out. Knowing from personal experience that this can happen if the tube doesn’t seat right with the tire and rim, I walked it back to buy a tube. The guy there (proprietor?) grabbed a tube and fixed it in less than a few minutes, and refused payment for the tube or the labor when I offered. I volunteered that it was an old-​ish tube and that I was happy to pay, and he steadfastly refused. That they went that extra mile for me goes a long way in my book. I will recommend this place to others and I will be back for future component/​accessory/​repair needs.
