Mayer’s is THE place for clueless wanna-​be handymen like me. Whenever I’m looking for a thing-​a-​ma-​jig, they point me in the right direction. ALSO! important! If you need to match up paint, they have the chops to do that. Superb… one of the true gems int he area. Great popcorn too!

Pardon my 90’s lingo here, but this place is THE BOMB. Before I had ever been to Mayer’s, I always had the perception that small, local hardware stores were never worth going to because they are pricey. I’m happy to say that Mayer’s has changed my mind.
The few times I’ve been here, I always feel overwhelmed because there seems to be so much stuff in a rather small-​ish space. But! I am always greeted rather quickly with someone asking me what they can help me find. Customer service for the win! Also, they have a popcorn popper there & always have bags of fresh, free popcorn for the taking. Way to win me over, Mayer’s!

Our family has been patronizing this wonderful store since I was a kid. It has always been a 5-​star experience from getting keys made, to finding household repair & maintenance supplies, to getting the lawn mower tuned up. I can’t think of a time when they were out of stock with something I needed. An the staff is always happy to provide a wealth of information and tips to get the job done right. They are the best.
The customer service cannot be beat. It’s why we still go there even after we’ve moved away from the Browncroft & Cobbs Hill neighborhoods. Sometimes I just stop in to browse when I’m nearby to remember the good ol’ days. It’s worth the trip to avoid the big box nightmare.

But it also covers a basic that most large hardware stores lack nowadays, friendly, and knowledgeable staff.
It is sad that in this day and age, going to a hardware store and getting one’s questions answered quickly and accurately is considered a rare gift. Luckily for me, Mayer is close to my house so I don’t have to drive far to get what I need.

I’m new in Rochester, and made it to this store for the first time today. It will definitely not be my last visit: the staff were knowledgeable, competent and friendly, and it’s astonishing how much is packed into what looks from the outside like a small place.
I’ll second Amy P’s four A+ ratings. And yes, they do take plastic.

Why would you even shop at a Home Depot or a Lowes? This is how all hardware stores should be, actually all retail should be. Always has a great selection with fair prices and amazing friendly customer service.
Even if I did not live in the neighborhood, I would travel to shop at this store. You can see why they have survived all the big box stores moving in and around the city.

Love this place, Don always helps us and he is a delight. They have everything you need at Mayers! Great lawn and garden and paint departments. They even helped my husband fix our lawn mower. Just a gem in the N Winton neighborhood

Not to beat a dead horse here… but YAH, Mayer’s Hardware is the bee’s knees.

So friendly & helpful. I took a few keys there that Home Depot had attempted to copy but didn’t work. The staff fixed the keys for free, and seemed happy to take the time to do it. I needed a few things & shopped around as well, and was pleased to find a huge selection. I’m definitely going back here, & I’ve made it a point to recommend the store to several friends.

One of the friendliest businesses I have visited. I entered the store, looking entirely lost as I didn’t see any signs as to where the key cutting area was. One of the employees immediately asked me what I needed and directed me to the back of the store. The store was unexpectedly large and seemed to be well stocked.
The employee who copied my key did it quickly and I was in and out in well under 10 minutes. If I ever need anything hardware related, Mayer will be my first stop.

Great local hardware store, having grown up in ACE I was happy to find the place with the helpful hardware folks. We went in with a small list of things, and was offered help by 5 or so employees. Although slightly more expensive than the big box stores, the products are better quality, and the employees actually know what they are doing. We took our 2 yr old with us, so most of our time was spent trying to stop him from grabbing sharp items, or drinking poison… But the man in paint immediately handed him stir sticks so he could drum on the paint cans, instead of giving us dirty looks. This local hardware is miles better than the big box stores. Well worth a longer drive, this will definitely be my new hardware store.

My boyfriend and I are in the process of moving to a new place. Hooray, we can finally have our own washer and dryer! On Sunday, we had them delivered. But we were faced with a dilemma: how do we hookup our new washer and dryer? I’m completely inexperienced in the whole DIY, handyman situation. We called Mayer Hardware, explained what we were doing in the most rudimentary way regarding the gas hookup and the hoses provided, so on and so forth. Before we drove to the store — which conveniently was only a couple minutes down the road — we took a video of what the whole thing looked like, which actually helped a ton as Rob knew exactly what we needed after watching it. They were patient and helpful while we were clueless. Boom, they found us the right attachments and explained in detail what we needed to do to hook it up.

This is the friendliest little store you’ll ever find. And I don’t mean to be negative in saying little. It’s small in a good way and the selection and inventory is quite surprising. Yes, it’s not Home Depot or Lowes but I’m quite frankly amazed at what you’ll find here and the advice you’ll get.
Contractors from all over the area recommend Mayer when it comes to paint. I’ve done an extensive amount of remodeling over the past several years and in my work, I refer a lot of people to contractors, suppliers, etc. When you ask people about paint, the bigger names like Hadlocks comes to mind and yes, they do a nice job, but the gnelteman who runs the paint department at Mayer is the one they’ll always tell you to go to when you have an issue or a real question. He is solution oriented and won’t oversell you. Nobody is more knowledgeable and helpful. That’s why you see a constant stream of business coming into this place. And it’s not just from the neighborhood. I drive 20 minutes right past Home Depot to get there and I’ll do it every time.
I had to go yesterday to pick up some stain and seeking a solution to bust some really stuck lug nuts on my zero-​turn mower blades. I was all set to pay $ 120+ for an impact wrench and they would have been more than happy to sell it to me but instead, they suggested an $ 8 alternative which was a 3′ length of iron pipe to provide the leverage I needed to bust those nuts open. It worked, and as a consequence dinner with friends that evening was essentially free.
And by the way, they always have free popcorn and coffee. Try finding that at Home Depot or Lowes!

This place is a great local hardware store. They can answer questions, have a great stock with variety better than the big box stores. The prices are decent and the staff is knowledgeable. The variety is superb. Unfortunately, if you need 17,000 boxes of 1″ long drywall screws, you need to go elsewhere (grin). But, they always have the things that the other stores do not. Some examples, lamps and electrical parts, o-​rings, a veritable candy store of hardware and fasteners. Great tool selection and a whole half of the store dedicated to paints, adhesives, etc. This is a perfect local hardware store for of all your «regular needs». The only thing you don’t see here is lots of large raw materials and larger retailing (4×8 drywall, lumber, snowblowers, etc.), otherwise all that you need is here.
6÷6÷13 — They updated this place within the last few months and it is still a great place. I went in there the other day to find some m4 bolts for my car repair. They are all super helpful. The update has their tools all set up on sliding shelves and packs more into a small space. I like these guys.

This place has saved me so many trips to Henrietta/​Penfield/​Webster. It’s a small store, but don’t be deceived– the inventory is pretty good. The staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. I thought a small store like this would be much more expensive (and I was ok with that, because it was still saving me a trip to the ‘burbs), but I haven’t actually noticed much of a mark-​up at this place compared to Lowes or Home Depot.

My family has been going to this hardware store my whole life. It’s always very easy to find someone to help me, and they are experts in answering any question I have ever had.
When my license plate came loose from its plastic frame, a store clerk showed me how to disassemble the frame and drill pilot holes for the new screws, which he then helped me find in the correct type and size. He spent 20 minutes with me for a 60 cent purchase.
They also have a great variety of products, including some things I have purchased for my gardening business that I have not seen in any other stores. There is a good range from cheap and simple to professional grade.
My only complaint is that I wish they were open a little later on the weekends. I hate having to go to Home Depot when I break a tool or run out of grass seed (or whatever) on a saturday or sunday afternoon.
