A Cut Above Pet Grooming

Val is so the best at doing my Standard Poodle.

We have a Snoodle who is our child. (I know – we’re nuts). We had good luck at another groomer in North Park for many years, but our baby was always uneasy when we dropped her off, almost to the point of afraid. A long term North Park neighbor recommended Val (the owner) as well as the recommendation was echoed by our Vet as Alley has certain ‘special needs’. Well, Alley loves to go to A Cut Above so much that she jumps for joy in the car when we pull up. ‘Thank you to all’ at A Cut Above for making the ‘trip to the groomer’ a treat rather than a bad day. BTW – the quality of her cut is fantastic!

I’m so glad I found A Cut Above Pet Grooming to groom my adorable cockapoo, Baxter. I’ve gone to Valerie about 3 – 4 times and each time, Baxter comes home looking extra handsome and clean. My dog is very shy and skiddish so Valerie makes sure to try and keep him comfortable which is very important to us. We are new to the area and we took our poodle mix here because of a recommendation we got a fellow dog owner at the Grape St. Dog Park. I called yesterday. Got an appointment for this AM and 2 hours later, I picked up my perfectly groomed pup. Val is tremendous at her craft and I will be taking my dog back here for as long as I live in San Diego. A gentleman from the dog park recommended… phoned yesterday, A Cut Above got her in today… two hours later I get a phone call, and upon picking her up, she was not crying as she sometimes does.
A lovely environment for your dog, almost spa like… all animals (6 when I returned) were calm and very happy. Fantastic job on the grooming, fabulous triple colored artistically shaped bow. Let A Cut Above loose and they will simply perform magic.
My collie is 14 years old, and the owners will always take special needs into consideration. The older greyhounds the owner rescues were calmly laying on the floor, snuggled in their in beds in blissful contentment. Quaint! Highly recommend!

Excellent place. Val is great, loves animals and does a wonderful job of grooming and cutting hair. I take my two dogs to her and am always pleased. Also reasonably priced. I know if you take your dog in for grooming you will not be disappointed.

I’m a new fur baby mama to a Shih Tzu and when we got him he was a little fur ball. I contacted a co-​worker who has a Shih Tzu to see where she takes her Zoe. She recommended A Cut Above and that Val is very good and her Zoe loves Val.
We brought our fur baby «Crixus» on Saturday at 9:30. My BF and I couldn’t agree on what or how much we wanted her to cut off of Crixus. So I finally said Val, you’re the expert you do what you do just make sure he has no long hair in the rear. LoL
Before noon, I got the call to pick him up. I could not be happier with his new look. Val did a very good job on him and she noticed things about him that we already knew but that let me know that she knows a thing or two about her clients and is very knowledgeable in her craft.

Val is a dream groomer! She always leaves my princess looking ready for a cover shoot! She’s available every time I call her and I’ve been calling her for 8 years. She only works Wed-​Sunday so I call first thing Wed morning and she always gets me in either that day or within 2 days. She always calls me promptly when she’s finished and doesn’t mind keeping my dog for a little while extra if I’m busy with the kids or running errands. She never complains and she’s always super sweet. She remembers my kids, my family and all my troubles ;-)
I always pay cash because I know how tough it is for small businesses and she’s sweet to take my checks when I haven’t had time to run to the bank.
As far as grooming, she goes above and beyond with my dog in particular because she always checks and expresses her anal glands. Gross! But Val does it as part of the service and she always lets me know how they are. My poor little dog got an infection once and had to have it lanced and drained!!! Apparently little poofy French dogs are prone to this. As far as I“m concerned, Val saves me a $ 140 vet visit every time I take my dog in!!! Regarding the hair, she always asks me how short I want it, and I am allowed to be very specific– long face, short body, long tail etc etc. In the summer, I keep everything short, but in the winter I like it to grow out a bit more. Everyone I know who goes to Val has been going for multiple dogs for over 10 years. She is great!

I called to schedule an appointment or come in and the person there snapped at me, «make it in 20 minutes.» One of my dogs desperately needed a nail trim, so I walked her down there anyway. She acted inconvenienced and cut my dog’s nails, scolded me for letting them grow, and then told me they didn’t accept visa. I payed later that day, but it wasn’t a good experience for either of us. Maybe it was just a bad day. It came highly recommended by a friend. They drop their dog off, have a drink next door, and pick her back up. I was told, «stay here!». I would have anyway because I’m paranoid, but sheesh. Not sure how my friend gets away with having his drink with such a drill sergeant.

We’ve been taking our dogs and my mother in laws dogs here for over ten years, Val has always done a superb job. Her prices are reasonable, she finishes your dog on time, and she is very thorough. She only works four days a week so you have to make an appointment.
Take my word for it Val is a North Park treasure.

I really hate to write bad reviews but they just did not do a good job on my poodle. His ears were cut way too short (and still haven’t grown back after 2 months or so) I still tipped 20% but felt like they rushed him (took an hour or so usually my other dog groomer in LA takes at least 3 hours) Val is polite enough but the cut just wasn’t the business. I know every one has a bad day but I was really not happy with it. He didn’t even look like a poodle when I got him back :(

I’ve been taking my Pug here for years. He loves Val, the owner, and she loves him. She knew him by name after the first visit and she always will make time for him no matter what time or day. Also, she remembers each dog, their allergies, their skin issues or conditions, everything. Every person coming in and out of there is smiling — such a great neighborhood feel to the place.
It’s a small, community groomer with her doing most of the work at all times. If others are there helping, it’s someone related or close to her. You will never have to worry about your dog being handled by someone who is just there to punch a clock.
Val’s word means everything to me. She knows more about pooches than anyone I’ve met. Just speaking with her you can tell her love of dogs and her passion for what she does. You’ll never meet a harder worker or a kinder lady. And to me, the person grooming my dog is just as important as how he looks and smells after (which is a delight by the way).
It’s a small place with a big heart and lots of love for all sizes and breeds of pups. Plus her prices are AMAZING. You seriously won’t find a better deal or a better person anywhere in San Diego County.

I loved this place! I just moved to the area and I was looking for a groomer close to my house. I passed by it when I was walking through the neighborhood and gave them a call. The lady that answered the phone was really nice. When I went in for my appointment, she asked me what I wanted and told me it would be about two hours until I could pick him up.
They gave my dog such a great haircut! They did exactly what I wanted, and he was really happy and in a good mood when I picked him up. I felt like they treated him really well and my dog wasn’t anxious to leave. I haven’t noticed any nicks or cuts on him, and he smells great! I’ll definitely be back!
