Cabrillo Pet Hospital is the only Pet Hospital in Point Loma and Ocean Beach that is certified by the American Animal Hospital Association.

Cabrillo Pet Hospital & Pet Care Center is the only place in Point Loma and Ocean Beach that has a combined Pet Store, Pet Boarding Facility, and Doggie Daycare Center all in one. And combined, Cabrillo has an experienced medical team that has worked together longer than any other in the neighborhood.

Manager

Alex has been at Cabrillo for more than 15 yrs, She is a licence RVT (Veterinary Nurse). She loves working at Cabrillo Pet hospital and enjoys every aspect of her job. «Cabrillo is an extention of my Family!»

Dr. Gary Rose graduated from Michigan State University in 1973. He is a member of the national, state and county veterinary association as well as the American Animal Hospital Association. He is past president of the San Diego county veterinary association. He opened Cabrillo Pet Hospital in 1975 and is fortunate to still enjoy his «job» after more than 30 years.

By surrounding himself with such an experienced, caring staff, he has built one of San Diego’s most respected Veterinary Hospitals and Pet Care Centers.

Dr. Rose enjoys back packing, fly fishing, gardening and just about anything outdoors. He and his wife Leslie have one dog, four cats and four Koi fish and three children.

I absolutely love this place. They take great care of the dogs. The staff is all wonderful; yes, even Dr. Rose. I saw some bad reviews of him on here ( Unilocal) and he is a little rough around the edges but no way deserving of one star. He gets the job done and tells you like it is; I appreciate that quality. He has saved me, literally, thousands of dollars, and never makes me do anything he feels is unnecessary. The prices are a bit lower and the vet techs make you feel like family! My dogs always try to drag me into the office when we walk by and we are always greeted and treated with or without an appointment. The office always calls later that day, after an appointment, and later that week to make sure my dog (s) are doing better.
You’ll find some, very few, bad reviews on this place; that’s because it is awesome; and read the ones you find, they are just silly and dramatic.
Once again, Dr. Rose has a dry sense of humor. He’s treats my pets to the best of his ability and I absolutely love him! It’s a family at Cabrillo and he’s the work-​oholic father figure! I Love you guys and Spartacus and Maximus do too!

I’d like to start by saying the staff was really nice and I have debated writing this for a few months and finally decided I needed to. I chose Cabrillo because I have an older dog who has some medical issues, is blind, and we were new in town. The first few times we were very happy. However the last time I left my dog Grover there for two nights and the second morning I got a phone call that said he thew had diarrhea the night before and had vomited a few times that morning. I missed the call but had gotten there within an hour or so of when they called to pick him up. They asked casually if I wanted him to get checked out by the vet and not knowing what was going on I said I wanted to see if he would do better at home. But I’m surprised they hadn’t already had him checkout out since the whole reason I chose them was because they were a vet boarding facility. I asked if they fed him anything different or extra food, and they said no. I payed $$ and took him home but he kept getting worse to the point I had to take him to the ER. Nothing like this had ever happened before. Days later, and THOUSANDS of dollars, and Grover on his death bed… he is now better. It turned out he had a BAD case of Gastroenteritis brought on by to much fat and I’m assuming to many treats. The reason I’m writing this is because they never even called to see if he was OK. They should have not charged me for the stay, and they should have brought him to their vet when he started to get sick. Really disappointed.

We were visiting from out of state and needed a place to take our dog for a bath and some downtime while we visited museums. She was well cared for, they gave her a bath and then put her in a kennel and she slept until we got back to pick her up. She smelled so good she was like an air freshener for the car on the way back to the hotel. Thanks for taking such good care of our ‘baby’!

People were very nice and professional, the office was clean, and most importantly, they helped my buddy by immediately eliminating his discomfort and decisively giving me what I needed to prevent the issue further. Dr. Rose was great– living up to his stellar reputation. Thank you! I’ll bring my other guy in soon!

Everyone here is of the best caliber in San Diego… I recently lost my best friend Anubis, of 12 years and they looked after him since he was a puppy. They were always compassionate, caring, and NEVER took advantage by charging too much for services. If you want cheap vet care, that’s one thing, and you get what you pay for, but I never minded paying a fair price for one of the best friends I ever had and knew he was taken care of. Upon his passing, they even sent flowers to our home. The class and elegance of this place is second to none. Thank you Cabrillo. I look forward to bringing you our next pet when it’s time. Thank you

One of our cats started having patches of hair fall out and scabs on her skins. Worried about what this could be, I contacted Alex at CPH and she immediately scheduled me for a same-​day appointment to see Dr. Hibner. From the moment Bella and I came in, we were treated with warmth and care. Everyone was very friendly and even Bella, who normally freaks out around strangers, was more at ease than I would have expected. Turns out she had somehow gotten exposed to fleas and had an allergic reaction. Antibiotic and antihistamine shot later, with anti-​flea treatment and antihistamine pills to go, we were on our way. I’ll admit the expense was more than I expected but the expediency and care was great. It would have been nice if they offered a first time patient special like some places offer free or ½ price exam the first time but overall, it was a great experience and we’d bring our pets back here again.

We’ll never forget how well we were treated a couple of years ago when both of our elderly, American Cockers were treated here. On top of the best consultation /​advice (by Dr. Rose), after our beloved pets passed, we received flowers from Cabrillo! Where else would you be treated so well?! Thank you for being the type of clinic we appreciate! Now that we’re proud «parents» of a new, rescued, English Cocker we are glad to be back and also know that Dr. Rose is still there!

I’ve been taking my pets here since 2005 and wouldn’t go anywhere else!
The first time we saw Dr. Rose, I suppose you could say he was cold and short, but not anything like what some of these other reviewers describe. Each successive time we’ve seen him, he’s gotten progressively warmer and is actually quite charming and funny! Being in the beach area, he’s probably used to seeing people once and never again after they move. Everyone that I know who has been in the area long term loves him! If you plan on being here long enough to be considered a «local,» then definitely give him a chance.
Dr. Hibsner is also great! Much warmer and personable at first than Dr. Rose.
Will write more in depth when I have more time…

Dr. Rose and staff have been through lifespans of of pets with my family and I since first started visiting him in 1997. I have been a happy customer ever since. I have had him treat three amazing, healthy dogs, countless kitties, and my sister’s pets as well. Alex, Carol and the rest of the staff are kind, thoughtful, and certainly love what they do. I have only great things to say about Dr. Rose as well. He has saved my cat Noche, who actually used up all of her nine lives, within her first year. (I’m not even sure how old she is at this point). The grumpy smelly cat is still alive and well:)

Cabrillo Pet Hospital is a great place to keep your pet healthy.
The staff (esp Carol) is fantastic, and a testament to that, is how long they have all worked there!
Is it expensive? Yes, a little. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
They truly care about your pet and their special needs. Our Lucy has been low maintenance all of her life, and now that she is 12, they are treating her, and us with dignity and kindness. I highly recommend CPH & Dr. H. A class act.

I recently adopted a new kitten from the SD Humane Society and brought him here to Cabrillo to get his first check up and round of shots. I was happily welcomed by Carroll at the front receptionist desk and swiftly placed into an examination room.
Darlene, the first doctor to come into the room and see him was very nice and gentle with him. I felt very comfortable with her handling him as she talked me through everything she was doing – in addition he didn’t even fight her.
Dr. Rose followed soon after and I was just as impressed with the level of care and compassion he showed my kitten. He was very knowledgable and compassionate. Dr. Rose was able to somehow keep my kitten very calm the entire time (he’s been somewhat crazy lately). I was impressed how gentle Dr. Rose was with him.
I definitely intend to bring my kitten back for everything I need, as well as any animals I have in the future!

I love Cabrillo Pet Hospital. I brought both my previous golden and now my current golden here, so I have been a customer for around 8 years now. The staff is wonderful and they are always kind and considerate when dealing with my fur baby. Dr. Rose is very concise and to the point, which I appreciate. I guess folks look for different things from their vets but we have always received accurate, professional, and often times preventative care without the sugar coating, which I prefer when it comes to serious issues. We have also boarded here for years now and our dog always comes out happy and healthy. I highly recommend this vet.

Always friendly and helpful, prices aren’t too high. The staff works well with my nerves and also my fur babies, we both get nervous and they are very gracious of that. Appointments are always fast and thorough. Dr. Rose is knowledgeable and to the point and he has a real passion for animals.
The clinics once a month really helps me and my budget out too.

This review is for our boarding and doggy day care experience. The staff has always been accommodating with bringing our dog HAZEL (she says hi to all staff there who are reading this) for doggy day care. Hazel always comes home happy after a long day of playing with the other dogs.
They know how to handle dogs very well, and the staff is great. They even sent us home a picture of our dog playing!
Would highly recommend this place to board your dog for the night or to drop off for the day.

I have been bringing my cats to Cabrillo for about 15 years, and I really couldn’t be happier. During that time I’ve lost 3 cats, and gained 3 others (not counting the ones that were just passing through). Through it all the staff has been gracious and kind, and I appreciate the many times they’ve gone above and beyond for my furry cat children.

I first want to say that there are quite a few ladies that work at Cabrillo as their support staff and they are lovely, kind and empathetic. This review is not about the,. Unfortunately, they have to work with Dr. Rose.
Dr. Rose is by far the most rude, non-​kind, non-​nurturing human I’ve perhaps ever met. It is shocking he is in a profession that requires care of animals. When I took my cat there with a large lump on her leg and concern that she was not eating, he acted like it was no big deal and told me to wait for labs… which ended up being 5 days (he promised 1 – 2). When I brought her back in, he flippantly said we could «just cut off the leg.» He seriously said that. I ended up taking her elsewhere and she passed away due to a very rapid spread of cancer. It was horrible for me and my family.
My cat getting cancer is not anyone’s fault, but if you want to be treated with kindness and have your beloved pets be treated in a loving way, then avoid Cabrillo. There are many other options and we all deserve to have compassion and empathy when caring for our loving pets.
