Vintage Wines Limited

Cannot believe this place has been around for 29 years and I just discovered it last week. Close to my son’s soccer classes, it’s a fun place to come and pick out some reasonably priced wines. They’ve got great descriptions along with ratings from various places. The price tags are on the wooden crates holding the bottles. Kind of small. I wish they’d affix the price tags right on the descriptions of the wine and make it easier to read. I only had 10 minutes to pick out a few bottles just before closing time. The one wine I opened for $ 11.95 was a gem. I can’t wait to come back and explore some more.

Selection and prices are impressive. I will be frequenting this place to maintain my wine cellar collection. If you like wine, this place will be an excellent fit.

Never would’ve known this was here on Miramar. The store’s layout with the colorful sticky notes reminded me of a bookstore. They had Malahat rum less than what Bevmo was selling them for.

I have been a Vintage Wines customer for decades. It is an outstanding source for very reasonably priced wine, both super premium and value wines. There are no «case discounts» because every bottle is priced that way. There is no attitude here. Bob is the Head Nut, with a lifelong knowledge of wine; Dore is über knowledgeable and will always be able to teach you something… but ALL of the staff is knowledgeable, approachable and will impress you, surely expanding your enjoyment and selection of wine. If you love wine, then I suggest you visit VW, talk to any of the staff and tell them what you like and they will undoubtedly make interesting, insightful suggestions for you to try. If you know little about wine, don’t be afraid to tell them so… simply tell them what you like, and let them start you on a d’lish journey of wine discovery.
If u miss the weekly Saturday tastings, u r CRAZY. They are clearly designed to be at a bargain price to showcase wines, educate and of course sell wine. Not to be missed. I regularly travel to SF and often find myself at the Ferry Building on Saturdays for the quintessential farmers market there… eats and food foraging. More often than not I end up at the wine bar there. The offerings and prices for tasting, never cease to make me realize the outstanding value of the tastings at VW on Saturdays. Seriously…$ 5 and sometimes $ 10 (plus gratuity) for 6 wines is always an enriching experience. Plus a $ 2 tasting set of lower priced wines. And I often fetch an interesting bottle from the store, and have it opened to taste to see if I want to purchase a larger quantity. Cork the remainder of the bottle & bring it home, or share with the regular oenophiles in the tasting area. You can bring food; cheese; bread and nosh while you taste.
The store is located on Miramar Rd. and very convenient. It is nothin’ fancy, located in an aging retail strip center; fluorescent t-​bar ceilings… Remember that fancy is nice but in the end you pay for that. If you thrive on a knowledgeable staff, unpretentious atmosphere, and very fair competitive prices, VW is for you. Highly recommended.

I am hugely passionate about wine. I bleed grape juice. So to find a store with a good selection like this, I was excited.
Their selection, is quite good. Domestic, old world, new world, $ 12 Beaujolais Village to $ 500 grand cru Bordeaux, you can find it here. Within each region, it’s not the biggest selection, but it’s enough and they bring in new bottles very regularly, it keeps things interesting and can please most palettes. I often find a hidden gem here now and then as well :)
The staff is just very friendly and knowledgeable. Always a good sign.
But, unfortunately, I have two big problems. One, the store is very disorganized. They have signs for the main regions, but everything else is just scattered throughout. And not just that, but you can find a Spanish wine all the way in the back, or on the wall somewhere, away from the Spain aisle. It’s just confusing. When I mentioned I find hidden gems, which is great, but I literally mean hidden. My second problem, is the staff. Well… some of them can be a bit snooty and pretentious. I buy all sorts of wine, from inexpensive Beaujolais Village to grand cru German Rieslings and Burgundy. But if I ask for a tasty French, medium-​full bodied, high on secondary flavors but without the floral under $ 20, I would hope they carry something like that, but I certainly expect them to believe a bottle like that is achievable. Instead, I often get a response more in the lines of, well bottles like that simply don’t exist. Anyway, they seem to think that great wine costs a lot, when I think great wine can cost a lot, but can also be inexpensive. Heck, terrible wine can cost in the hundreds. Anyway, if you know what you want and only want to purchase wine, I certainly recommend Vintage Wines Ltd. I for one, like to befriend the merchants and chat, and for me, this isn’t my favorite.
I will end on a high note, however. Vintage Wines Ltd. definitely fills a niche SD lacks, that being the rarer, often more expensive, wines. If that’s what you’re after, definitely check this place out.

I’ve been going here especially around the holidays to buy wine as gifts. This has been a great spot for red wines with awesome prices. Be sure to register your name with them so they can bring up your history of purchases. Helped me out with buying a rioja that I bought 2 years ago!!!
They also have nifty accessories and a pocked aerator and nifty corking devices of all shapes and sizes. I’m no wine expert but at least these guys are! All my wine picks from here have been excellent at events.

Best kept secret in town! They have the best priced wines in town — even beating Costco on Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc right now at $ 10.95 per bottle. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and wine tasting on Saturdays.

Why I hear you shout? Well, firstly, as for most wine shops, it’s about the selection. And the selection here is very very good. There is everything from simple Sauvignon Blancs all the way to Bordeaux First Growths and some unique US collectibles. There is as much variety here as in K&L in San Francisco so that’s impressive stuff!
Secondly, like everything in life, it’s about the SERVICE. Service here is fantastic and everyone is happy to help you with their advice. In particular, Dore is superb, being highly knowledgeable and informative. You will not be lacking in attentiveness and support and will get the ideal wine for your palate/​dinner!
Thirdly, the prices. the prices are very reasonable. Even the expensive stuff is priced appropriately and you will not have to go anywhere to shop around as this place is a fair place!
So, if you live in San Diego or nearby, forget the other stores (especially the one downtown in Gaslamp which is overpriced and unfriendly) but come here! And if you are passing by, drop in and fill up your cellar. Cos you will be hard pressed to find a better wine shop than Vintage Wines!

Great wine selection, knowledgeable sommelier and owners. The Saturday tastings are great. They have plenty of seating and you are welcome to bring your own hors d’oeuvres.

Went here for Saturday wine tasting on Labor Day Weekend, found a bottle of 2004 Tattingers Comtes I have been looking for for years!

We really enjoy wine and wine culture, and this is a great place to get some of both. They have great prices, service and take good care of you.
They have a lot in stock, are constantly getting private cellars and have a tasting bar. They have many wines at many different price points, offer the best service for some of the lowest pricing in town, and have older wines on hand. The tasting bar is growing in number of wines to taste and with the economy turning around, and I am finding more and more higher end wines in there, something I prefer to drink, as life is too short to drink bad or average wine. We had Numanthia and Alta Gracia in thier tasting two weeks ago as these are good and great wine; yum and super yum! We cant wait to see whats in the next line up.

Who can say no to $ 5 wine tasting or even $ 2 wine tastings on Saturdays! This place is really a wine cellar/​shop that sells all different kinds of wines but they also have a side of their shop where people can come in and enjoy a tasting. I was Unilocaling some places to visit, as I usually do once in a while and I stumbled upon this place. The owner of the shop was very friendly and nice. He definitely knew this stuff about wines. We had a great convo about Malbec’s since those are my new favorite things.
The wine tasting was A-​OK. The $ 5 wine list had about 6 different types of wine, all red wines and the $ 2 list had wines ranging from white to red. I wasn’t that all impressed with the selections they have however I did like being able to get to a «good» place for only $ 5. Now only if they sold cheese and crackers here, I would come every weekend!
FRIENDLY TIP: If you’re coming here for a tasting, bring some cheese, crackers, salami/​cabrese. It would make this experience go from good to GRREAAT (as Tony the Tiger would say it). :]

What do I like most about Vintage Wines Limited? They’re not only reputable, but they have some of the best prices out there. This is mega important when I’m in the mood to shell out some dough on a nice bottle of wine (because I’m quite the frugal bastard). My latest splurge? A 2008 Dominus (99 pts RP Wine Advocate) for $ 165. Most wine shops are either sold out or selling it for $ 170+. Woot!
They have an impressive inventory of premium, hard to find wines (especially in SD) such as: California cult wines (Scarecrow, Harlan, Araujo, Grace Family, etc.); Bordeaux First & Second Growth wines; and top shelf Champagne. I literally look like a bright-​eyed kid at Disneyland when I’m browsing through this place. It’s exciting!
Not looking to break the bank? They have a good selection of affordable wines perfect for a home cooked meal or your next soirée. But if you’re on a budget, I suggest driving down the street to San Diego Wine Company. I got an awesome deal on a 2007 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red there, but that’s for another review.

There’s a big difference between this wine store and the wine store only a couple of blocks away. Sure, they both have the reds, the whites, but this place has a lot more of the premium reds.
This place sells about 75% red wines as other wine stores sells about ⁵⁰⁄₅₀. The prices vary from $ 4 all the way up to a $ 11,000 bottle.
But you don’t need to get an expensive bottle to get some decent wine. They do have a lot of $ 10 range red wines that will compliment your meal.
And if you’re unsure about the wine you want, ask Bob, he is the super-​expert on this stuff. He is a part owner and a collector himself. They also have wine tastings every Saturday for about $ 10. You get 5 – 6 tastings too. Bring some food if you want to partake on the wine tasting.
I’ll definitely come back, not just for the casual bottle, but some bottles for celebrating too.

My dad is a wine lover. I am not. However, I have to admit, he loves coming here when he visits me in San Diego. For him to say that, I guess this place has made a great impression on him.
There’s a huge selection of wines and they talk their own wine language.
They also have a $ 5 wine tasting thing. You get a selection of 6 wines to taste-​test. Not a bad deal especially if you come with someone and chill. Bring your own bread though!
If i loved wine more, I’d be a frequent customer. Maybe one day :)

Wow. I don’t know if the man who was in charge the day I went was the owner but MAN, does he know what’s going on. I was able to get really good recommendations on some whites and reds. They have lots to choose from and he was really honest about the fact that they were not completely stocked (they were awaiting a shipment in the coming weeks-​something about distribution dates or release dates???). Anyway, he was super nice and gave us a mini-​lesson on bordeaux and ports.
I will definitely go back to find more wine and also to learn a bit more. They have an email list and monthly wine tastings that I also plan on going to. It is in a very industrial area of san diego (miramar rd) so I would avoid it during business rush times (the freeway entrance and exit are a true nightmare). But other than that, it’s a great place to find good wine.

This store is definitely a hidden gem. Bob is always there when we go and he’s very helpful and knowledgeable. The wines seem reasonably priced even though my boyfriend and I end up buying more than we should.
We love wine and are familiar with our wine preferences but always like to get input or suggestions from Bob.
I prefer this place over SDWC for no specific reason. We’d probably end up buying just as much wine if we’d go to SDWC but definitely recommend Vintage Wines if you haven’t been.

This is my favorite wine store in San Diego because of the prices and friendly service. There is no way you can go wrong with a place that understands how to help you find what you need even when you have no idea.
