Proper Suit

I’m not a guy who wears suits. Went to prep school and small New England college, so I spent my youth in a tie and blazer and vowed I’d wear Carharts for the rest of my life. Well, I got hitched and my bride set up a fitting at Proper Suit. McGregor was awesome. Very relaxed, helped me pick everything out. Turnaround was just a couple of weeks. Long story short I’m obsessed with this suit. Can’t stop wearing it. I feel amazing when I’m in it. Now I’m planning on getting several more. A custom-​made suit is a whole new ball game. I went to Proper Suit after being unhappy with the way off-​the-​rack fit my body and I heard about them through a friend who has really nice clothes. I work out a lot and do cross fit so I’ve developed a shape that doesn’t work for Brooks Brothers or Nordstroms etc. Fitting was super easy and McGregor is a man who can read people. It was kind of intense how he just understood my needs. He immediately knew that I wanted a cut that was versatile for my job in finance but also to wear to weddings and out on the town. I’ve never received an expert service like this for any product — even for things I spend way more money on. So I’m writing this review as I’m pretty shocked this service even existed. I think in SF technology has replaced a lot of things but the human interaction and eye cannot be replaced. McGregor is full-​fledged genius but is also a no bs kind of guy who is pretty hilarious.
Have 3 suits and counting — they seem to get better with each wear. Fabrics are from the best places in Italy and they’ve held up better than any of my more expensive off the rack suits. I bet Proper Suit in 5 years will be a huge company. Get in before they go corporate or McGregor stops doing the fittings!

An update on Propersuit as some things have changed and I have more experience (3×2 piece suits, 1×3 piece suit, 1x long coat) with them as well.
First off they don’t do walk-​ins — so ignore the silly 1 star review of someone who missed that information and never even got to see their product.
Personnel: McGregor is doing the SF fittings now, although I was perfectly happy with Max before — McGregor runs a clean ship with great communication and of course top notch knowledge of his craft (I’d expect nothing less from the co-​founder)
Process: they have a referral credit system now. each new client referral = $ 100 off for you (put towards a suit, pants, jacket, anything really) and they are stackable. I would note that Propersuit tracks your referrals and will issue you a generic coupon code — but they are still a small business and will work to make sure your billing/​invoice reflects credit appropriately. TL;DR — don’t worry if you didn’t get a coupon code or multiple codes, just make sure you work it out when you actually order your new pieces.
Experience: I’ve referred multiple friends to Propersuit by now for various reasons (job interview suits, wedding suits, general grown-​up updated to the wardrobe) and everyone has been above and beyond pleased with the service and experience. And over the years my body has changed but Propersuit has always been there to ensure that my suits adapt accordingly (within reason of course), whether that be taking up a hem, letting out a jacket, adjusting sleeves, etc. And it makes sense — would you take a referral from someone if they didn’t look impeccable in their own suit?
Overall Propersuit keeps getting better but still retains that small-​business feel (in a good way). You are a unique customer to them, not an online order #, and they will work to make sure you come out of the experience lookin’ sharp!

I’ve ordered several suits from Proper Suit and continue to be impressed. McGregor is great to work with. I’ll never go anywhere else for my suits.

Just paid for parking. Had trouble finding this place. We called them and they said we need an advance appointment and to pay a deposit up front for them to even measure my fiancé. Maybe we missed something on Unilocal?!We haven’t even seen the store or the suits, why would we pay you up front? And there was no attempt to offer us an appointment for later today seeing that we’re outside and trying to find the store. :(:(

If you’re looking to step up your suit game up, look no further. They under stand the 3 basic pieces of mens suiting– fabric, fit and construction. Do yourself a favor, make an appointment with a fit specialist and have an open mind. It’s important to know that they fabrics they have are much more expensive at other retail chains.

I’m going to keep this short and sweet: My experience with Proper Suit was as good as it gets. Weddings are amazing magical fairytale times that are, let’s be real, stressful as hell. Mcgregor helped me through the entire process, gave his advice where it was needed, helped me stay within my budget, and never tried to kiss my a** for an up-​sell (something that has happened literally every other time I’ve bought my suit). I walked away with a suit that made me feel sharper than I ever have before, and I learned a few things about how to suit up in the process. Overall, one of the best experiences of the whole wedding planning process, definitely a solid 5 stars.

I have been impressed by Proper Suit since the first time I heard about their business. My brother showed me a couple of suits that were made for him and I immediately knew I had to get one of my own. McGregor is extremely well-​versed, knowledgeable, and personable. He knew exactly what type of fit I was looking for while creating my first custom suit. I don’t think I have received more compliments on an outfit than the first time I wore the suit out in public to a wine tasting event. I work for an event space in SF that specializes in weddings and have recommended Proper Suit to a variety of bride and grooms looking for a special outfit for the big day. After seeing the final product and hearing the positive feedback from a variety of clients I can’t help but pass the word about their suits. Not one recommendation has been anything than super impressed and very happy with their suit and experience. Many of them have gone on to be repeat customers. Prices are surprisingly reasonable as well. Planning a wedding can be as stressful as it can be fun, and it’s great that they don’t have to worry about looking sharp on their wedding day thanks to Proper Suit.
A couple tips that I’ve noticed: They will probably need around 2 months from first fitting to the wedding date, although they have made suits quicker for some grooms in a bind in the past. And definitely go into the fitting with some idea of what you want as the fabric, customization and design options are endless, this helps expedite the process and ensures that you will get what you really want.
SF is really underserved with menswear options, but these guys are on a totally different level.

I’ve actually gotten to know the founders of Proper Suit back when they were a one studio operation just out of Chicago and doing trunk shows across the country. Over the past two years they’ve expanded and after visiting their studio in S.F. I’m glad to see they’ve grown.
A lot of these reviews are from guys who have just received their suits and barely had a chance to wear them to see how they’ve held up. I’ve actually owned one for almost three years and can give a bit of a long-​view perspective on the product. It’s held up great and the value for the quality of construction and precision of the fit is incredible.
Most custom-​made suits that you’d pick up in finer department stores will likely start you at 2 – 3 times the price just for their introductory base-​level fabrics. For that same price, or maybe a bit cheaper, you could go with Proper Suit and get upper-​tier fabrics that honestly perform way better, feel better and just straight up look better.
The construction is a full-​canvas floating chest piece with hand-​set shoulders and collar — that’s what at a minimum you should expect from a quality suit. Cheaper suits will fuse (i.e.: glue) the chest piece rather than stitch. Going with a full canvas gives you greater movement, a better drape and lasts longer.
Beyond construction, the fit you get is that of a truly custom piece of clothing. If you’re a «difficult» off the rack fit, then this is a solution for you. If you’re a person who’s just very picky and wants the details a certain way, here’s your chance to go nuts. You’re not just getting to pick the obvious custom details like linings, pocket types and stitching, but also you’re getting a fit that’s best for the irregularities of your body that an off-​the-​rack garment can never address.
I’m glad to see McGregor took over the S.F. office — as one of the founder he’s got a fantastic eye for fit and has pretty much seen and made suits for every body type out there so far. I’m not a difficult fit beyond slightly longer arms and the early stages of a beer gut, but it was nice to have a jacket that nailed it on the head for the not-​so-​obvious things like button stance and sleeve pitch.
Don’t just give Proper Suit a try — let them guide you toward wearing a suit that actually fits you well that you’ll enjoy wearing when the occasion calls for it.

Please do not shop here. I bought a suit for my wedding and McGregor dialed it in perfectly — so perfectly that it required zero alterations. I have owned several off-​the-​rack and made-​to-​measure suits and not a single one has ever fit me right. My propersuit doesn’t have any pulling or bunching or gapping — it’s 100% perfect. So why don’t I want you to shop at propersuit? Because I look better than you and I aim to keep it that way.

I work in finance, so I’m no stranger to suits. Depending on the fit of the suit, I’m either too big or too small for the cut. Sadly, I have not seen the semi-​fit, lanky Jew fit suit, to date. So when it came time for my wedding, I wanted to step it up a notch. I checked out my old friend Unilocal, and found Propersuit. Always a glutton for a good user experience, everything was extremely smooth. I also waited until the last minute (classic) but Macgregor had no issues getting me my tux on time. I can saw — This was, without a doubt, the best suit/​tux I have ever owned. I would have paid 2x the cost (Sorry Macgregor!) for the service, the fit and to have it on time. Thankfully, I didn’t have to. Honestly, stop reading this review and buy one of their suits. If they can fit me, they can literally fit anyone.

Proper Suit quality of material and service is first class. Both McGregor and Richard have handled suits for my husband. It’s not just about taking measurements, they understand style and which style best fits a guy’s lifestyle and business… That type of talent deserves 5 stars.

I recently purchased a new tuxedo from Proper Suit, and had a great experience! I had my initial meeting with McGregor at their location in San Francisco on Pacific Ave. (cool little spot, an old fire house), and he was very helpful giving me some style tips for tuxes vs regular suits, and in picking the fabrics. I also appreciated he was not pushy or trying to up sell me on more expensive elements, but really focused on what would look best on me.
They take your measurements based off a few standards suits (you put one on, and then they make notes of how that standard suit is vs. your body). The measurements were very detailed; I do have to say that upon getting the suit back a few weeks later, there were a few measurements that seemed to be off a bit. That said, McGregor was really committed to getting the fit just right. I went back for my second fitting, and he had the adjustments made within a week to 99% perfect. Even then, there was one small issue with the cuff, and he suggested he make one more tweak to get it perfect. Once I got it back after that final adjustment, I think it was pretty darn awesome, and I looked great for my wedding.
I’d recommend Proper Suit to you all for a great custom suit \ tux experience. I’d just recommend starting early before you need it, to allow for some time for follow up adjustments if needed.

I’ve purchased a couple of suits from Proper Suit, and both are absolutely amazing. I’ve never had a bespoke suit until now, and had no idea what the process was for having one made. I saw the pop-​up event to get measured in Washington DC and scheduled an appointment. The process was easy, and was done electronically.
The fitting was held at The Fairfax on Embassy Row in DC. McGregor walked me through the process and took my measurements. The amount of options is staggering, but you don’t feel overwhelmed. Perusing through beautiful fabric books and identifying every detail that you want makes the process engaging and fun. Prefer 5 buttons to four buttons on the sleeve? They can do that. Want a notch lapel instead of a peak or shawl lapel? They can do that. Single vent vs double vent? They can do that.
McGregor paid close attention to the fit around my shoulders and thighs. I never really focused on those areas previously as all of my other suits had been purchased off the rack. When I finally received my first suit a few weeks later, I was blown away by how much of a difference those areas made. The trousers feel amazing and don’t bind, and the jacket fit is comfortable and not too restrictive.
I’ve purchased a couple of suits from McGregor, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment. You’ll be blown away by the craftsmanship, quality of service, and attention to detail.

I was recently promoted to a vice president position which meant it was time to ditch the Dockers and start wearing conservative suits. I’m in my fifties and a tad difficult to fit (short torso, longish legs) so I thought I’d venture into a custom tailored suit vs OTR. I did an enormous amount of research and settled on Proper Suit; made the appt.; paid the $ 150; went in for my fit with Max in late December 2014.
The fit experience was fun. Max is friendly, knowledgeable about fit and style and made several nice suggestions regarding my suit. The firehouse location is very cool although I do wish it was lit better as at times it was difficult to select a fabric. I completed my fitting, and placed an order for 3 suits, plus a second pair of pants for each suit.
Suits arrived at my home 5 weeks later, pants fit perfect but the suit jackets just seemed a little «off». I had expected a more tailored look but thought it was part of the process and alterations would be made at my follow up fitting.
Went in with 2 out of the 3 suits (third suit fabric was out of stock) and met with both Max and a gentleman named McGregor. When I tried on my first jacket they both were very concerned about the fit. After discussing possible fixes, it was decided that the best plan would be to completely redo the measuring and re-​order the jackets (pants fit perfect). I was remeasured, a rush was put on the production and I went home and waited.
New suit jackets arrived in mid March and voila… perfect! No additional alterations necessary. All during the re-​make process McGregor kept me informed of the status via emails and phone calls. While it took much much longer then expected, the end result is what I expected. I look GREAT in my new suits and I couldn’t be happier.
Will I buy more suits from Proper Suit? Yes… waiting for 2015 lightweight fabrics to come in so I can order a summer suit (I travel to North Carolina every other week) Max and McGregor bent over backwards to put me in a perfect suit… even offering to drive out to the east bay for the third fitting.
Would I recommend PSuit to my friends? Yes.
A couple of suggestions to get the most out of your fitting. 1) Have a general idea of what you want in the way of style and color. Max will guide you from there. 2) Spend time on their web site looking at the different fabrics so you’re not overwhelmed during your fitting… they have a LOT of options… narrow the field via their website. 3) Get a sandwich at the deli on the corner… worth the trip into SF.

I like this suit, a lot. It’s the best fitting piece of clothing I own. I find myself looking for places to wear it because I feel damn good in the thing; bought it for my summer wedding, with plans to use for business afterwards, a tough cross but I think we pulled it off.
The experience was something entirely new for me. Finding the studio in an old firehouse was tricky the first time, but it certainly added to the allure. Max was immediately personable, and an educator. I don’t stomp around in New Balance shoes, but I am also out of my element when it comes to style or fashion. Like a true professional Max listened to my case, why I needed the suit, prompted me for things I like and don’t like, budget, personal taste… all things he brought into his suggestions on details of the suit; wools, buttons, linings, pockets, the myriad of cuts. My fiancée joined me for the fitting, as it was a suit meant for our wedding, and she too came away thoroughly impressed with the experience.
Some weeks later the suit arrived and I went back for the final fitting. Hot dog it fit well. I’m between short and regular jacket lengths, but no matter when it’s made to measure for me. The pants were a tad long so those were taken back for the tailor, but they provide a slim fit without the spandex look for my soccer legs. I also used the opportunity to pick Max’s brain for style advice on pairing with the blue suit.
In all about a 6 week process, but now they have my measurements for my next suitS. The experience was a nice mix between modern convenience with old school, classic quality. I’ve been recommending to all my friends. Check out Proper Suit if you’re even considering stepping up from the standard department store brands.
Planning to post a pic when I get one

I go to formal music awards and events, and I needed a tuxedo for the occasion. I only knew about this because of my girlfriend’s recommendation. I ended up getting a tuxedo, 2 blazers and an overcoat for when I’m back in France. Was so cool, the tailor was a real fun guy and knew exactly what I was looking for in all of the design and fit options. I’m tall and thin so fit is always tough but I was happy with the fit of the items.
I wish they had this in France because it is very affordable compared to London and Milan tailors.

I got my dad fitted for a suit from Max at Proper Suit for his birthday and he and I are both blown away by not only the product, but also the overall experience. He had been buying off-​the-​rack suits from Neiman Marcus for years, but this was his first fully custom suit and I don’t think he will ever go back.
After realizing all the detail and care that goes into receiving the suit, the prices were absolutely fair and manageable. After paying close to the same for a general, brand name suit, there is no comparison after receiving a suit he helped design and fits his specific body. My dad has bought 3 more suits since our initial birthday fit all over the phone with Max since he lives in Michigan. Highly recommended.

My suits up to this point have either been mix-​and-​matched off the rack, or eBay purchases that I had tailored to me after the fact. This worked great… when I was a thrifty student.
With my wedding coming up, I decided I wanted to look as good as possible. Thanks to liberal internet searching and the help of r/​malefashionadvice, I narrowed down my options and decided to give ProperSuit a try. I live in SF and I wanted the personal touch that comes with actually being face to face with someone, rather than ordering somewhat blind online through a place like Indochino.
So I place my reservation for a fitting and head up to Firehouse 8 when the time comes. Max greets me outside, he looks super sharp himself, which immediately goes a long way to making me feel like I’m in good hands. I explain I want a suit for my wedding, but it needs to be something I can wear in the future, as well. Something that will become an indispensable part of my dress wardrobe.
He has me put on my dress shirt and shoes which I brought along, and gets to work getting my measurements. Max is very thorough and has me try on a bunch of sample pants and jackets. I’ve already downloaded the style guide from the website and printed out a cheat sheet with my preferences and questions, so we run through all the options and eventually I select a material, color, and buttons. He did a great job explaining the differences between types of wool and providing his input on color based on what I told him about my plans.
The fitting room was cool — great view of the bay, and very spare. Max said they were going to build the space out a bit, but I actually liked that it was so simple — there were no pretensions. My one and only gripe is that the 1-​hour appointment felt just slightly too short, and I could tell Max had a packed schedule. Luckily this had no adverse effect on my experience.
6 weeks later, my suit arrives at my apartment. I try it on and it looks pretty good to me, but Max said to schedule a final fit check appointment with him to make sure, so I do that. We take a look at it together and it fits just about perfectly, no need for any adjustments.
Now, this is my first made to measure experience. Might it seem a more loose, unprofessional experience to those who are on a first name basis with their tailor and have already had a number of suits made? Sure, possibly. But I personally was impressed by Max’s professionalism, friendliness, and advice, and the suit looks fantastic.
ProperSuit keeps your measurements on file, and I’m definitely interested in getting another suit or two… someday!
