Golf Rose Animal Hospital

We have taken in our little fur baby for yearly shots here and always had a Great experience. The female doctor on staff is excellent. Sorry don’t know her name off the top of my head. They do everything in front of you in the exam room if you feel comfortable. Or at least the shots but… I love and really appreciate that as a pet parent.

This is a good pet hospital, but I have never had the need for a hospital for our animals. We had an emergency a few days ago where we absolutely has to get medical care for our dog. It was 11:30pm and they at just 20 minutes away.
We brought in our dog and the assistant was very helpful with the main goal of getting her to feel better. After an hour or so the assistant was able to stabilize our dog and told us the treatment plan. She told us to call back in the morning. We called in the morning and the day crew was almost 180 degrees different, it was if there was a bother to have them give us a report of our dog’s status. I brushed it off as they were busy. But in the next 24 hours the contact cycle repeated. The evening shift was helpful, the day shift was cold.
Finally when our dog will better we went to bring her home and have to deal with the day staff. We were told how much our dog had improved and given her medicine. After that we were told her was ready to be released. Next a person appeared with a bill. The only thing he said was «Here is the bill and what was done, will be you paying with a credit card.» I gave him my card and a caretaker immediately came out a separate room with out with our little dog.
My thoughts are that I much more prefer to communicate with the evening staff, but our dog received great care overall.

I swore a few years back (almost 3 years) after bringing our dog to this emergency vet I would never go back — not only did we wait forever, the vet was vague, a little sarcastic and in the end told us they were not equipped to help our dog and we needed to take him elsewhere — we had wasted almost 2 hours there, it cost us a fortune, they basically did nothing and we had to take him to another hospital over 45 minutes away (he ended up passing away).
However this summer (July 2015) our neighbor was playing with our dog in the yard with a stick and calmly walked around the front yard to state that he thought the dog got hurt — there was blood pouring out of his mouth (not an understatement). I tossed all 120+ pounds of him into the car and headed to the nearest emergency vet — Golf Rose. I shuddered as I entered but did not feel I had time to drive too far. Again I had to wait in the small waiting room after being seen by a tech. I explained that he was bleeding a lot and she did not seem to believe me — the dog was nervous and swallowing a lot. After she left there was a puddle of blood on the floor around my feet at least 3 feet in diameter and continuing to pool. I waited for 25 minutes, which seemed a life time and brought back a lot of memories and second thoughts. Then the vet came in — he was great. He took one look at the floor, took the leash and quickly removed the dog to the exam area. About 10 minutes later the vet came back, had me come back with him, showed me the 2 inch hole that the stick had ripped in his tongue and how it ripped his lip. He further explained what was needed, how long it would take and assured me that he was going to be sore but ok.
The vet was great! The vet services were great and his explanation of what to expect were very reassuring. The cost was a little high but then it was an emergency, they had to do surgery and he was safe. I would have paid whatever was needed.
The down side: The initial wait was unsettling considering the past experience and my sense that the tech did not have a real sense of what was really going on. I also thought that while they were doing the surgery and I was sitting in the room someone could of came in and offered to clean up the floor. I had to sit with my feet in a large puddle of blood for over an hour and a half. When they finally brought my dog back into the room, he was still so medicated that when he saw me he laid down by my feet and right in the puddle of blood. No one offered a towel or even paper towels to clean him off or to cover the seats in the car. Needless to say we were both covered in blood and the car looked like a mass murder occurred inside. No more sticks for this guy!

This isn’t even so much about the place… Even though they were amazing considering the circumstances. My dog unexpectedly passed away today and I was too devastated to go inside with my boyfriend and his dad. There was a lady and her husband in the parking lot whose dog had had a stroke and they were bringing her in at the same time. I don’t know that she will ever see this but I just need to thank her so much. They are incredible people. They walked me in and stayed with me and tried their best to keep me calm all while their own dog was having a very real problem. Just thank you so much. Their kindness didn’t go unnoticed. I left abruptly in daze and didn’t get a chance to say thank you. So if they ever see this just thank you for being so nice.

Sad review but such a loving family at this veterinarian clinic … They were sensitive in the phone when asking for prices and questions … Upon coming in with my sisters as an emotional wreck, they were sweet and very straight up with my pups condition and his chances … We had humanly euthanized him with iv and got to hold him they also wrapped him up in a warm blanket and explained everything for us to be prepared for with care and caution … Thank you Karolyn! You are amazing … We love you Bentley !!

My husband and I took our greyhound here for an evaluation of his foot. We probably overreacted and by the time we got there he was fine. The vet quickly evaluated, recognized we were «cautious» parents and told us he was fine and did not charge us for our visit. We were literally there less than 10 minutes. The staff was very nice. We hope we don’t have to come back here for an emergency visit for our dog’s sake but we would certainly come back here if we needed.

I had a good experience with the service at Golf Rose Animal Hospital. I went in with my lutino cockatiel (so needed to see an aviary vet). She was able to diagnose the problem.

Ive been there 3 times now. All for emergencies and everyone has been amazing!!!

I was concerned about my dog and thought she ate something that got lodged in her throat. The person that answered my call asked the symptoms and advised my dog may just have an upset stomach. She told me symptoms to be cognizant of, but it turned out my dog ate too much people food. I appreciate People who relax crazy dog owners into realizing it’s not always an emergency situation, thanks golf rose for the free consultation!

We bought an 8week old kitten from a breeder and the week before we picked her up the breeder’s husband shut the recliner on our kitten’s tail and amputated it at the base. They informed us they had taken her to the vet to be seen, but we later found out they had only called their local vet. After less than a week our poor little kitten became lethargic and pus started oozing at the site, we rushed her to Golf Rose. Dr. Mark Muskal did an expert job debriding the wound and coming up with a creative dressing. He allowed us to take pictures of before and after debridement so we could get our money back from the breeder to pay the vet bill. He was phenomenal. Penny had a long recovery, but is all healed up and doing well. Thank you Dr. Muskal!

Golf Rose Animal Hospital saved my life. Well I mean not really, but kind of. I can explain. Lets go back to June 2012. I walked into their kitten room and found the love of my life. For a mere $ 50, I rescued my companion. Shots and spay included. Everyone at GR has been so wonderful to Luna. They love her almost as much as I do. My life is changed for the better and I have Golf Rose to thank!

Something concerned me the last time I had to bring my cat up here to this office. There was a different veterinarian. There is always a different veterinarian. This time, this particular veterinarian was kind of pompous and cold.
I don’t think she really cares about what she does, to be honest. I’ve never felt that way about a vet before.
It’s a shame, I liked this place, after meeting this recent vet and not knowing if there are more staff like her I don’t feel comfortable leaving my pets there with out me. I think emotions and the way you feel around your animals can help or hinder their healing and I don’t want her around my pets anymore.
The atmosphere was just different with that vet there. Normally it’s friendly and welcoming and the techs are very friendly. This time it was just off. It really bothered me.

Last night was not a fun experience. At around 11PM I was laying in bed with my dog. «Bagel» the Beagle is almost 10, and she has been a little clingy lately. At about 11 last night she started panting. Then, she started drooling, then shaking, then she tried to stand up and fell over. I could see she was scared to death. Frankly, I thought she might be having a stroke. So, I comforted her for about an hour until she threw up on my comforter. I recalled she shook a lot last summer when she hurt her back. She had some pills left over, so I went and got one, but try as I might, I could not get it down her throat.
Her symptoms kept getting worse, so I woke up my son. (Jon is 23 and has an apartment in our basement.) Kerrie is out of town on business and all I could think about is me having to tell her the dog died while she was gone. He and I tried for about ½ hour to get her to take the pill, but no luck. So, finally I called the Golf Rose Animal Hospital. They are about a mile and a half from our house. They said to bring her right over.
When we got there, Bagel started to go downhill. At that point, she could hardly pick up her chin from the ground. When she did, she would fall. We waited a little too long in the waiting area. And when we were taken into a room, they checked her temperature, said they would be right back and left us for about ½ hour. In their defence, it was now after mid-​night and we were not the only people there with sick pets.
The vet checked her over pretty completely and drew blood — saying they would have the results in about 20 minutes. We waited about that long. When the vet came out, she said that Bagel had a severe inner ear infection. Because of the neurological issues, they wanted to watch her for the night, give her some IV fluids, etc. We left her there and went home.
At 7AM, the vet called me and said she was doing better. She had eaten a little and they took her out for a short walk. I thanked her and went back to sleep. At about 9 I got up and went to work, albeit a little late.
So, all in all, it was a good experience. I went from worrying I would lose my dog to her coming home the next day. My only complaint was price. When they come up with a plan, they come out to you with a quote — a quote! The quote was $ 900 to $ 1,000 and they wanted a $ 500 deposit to get started. What am I going to say, no? So, I handed over my credit card and they took the dog. Service was only okay because of the wait. I think the quality of the vets are good. But, their pricing is outrageous and they have you over a barrel.
If we need to use an emergency vet again, I will go back because of the proximity to my house, and I think the vets are very qualified. But, I am disappointed in what I considered to be price gouging.

We brought our first babe here for care per my boss’ recommendation, despite living in the city. They were fine and we had never gone anywhere else, so it worked. Expensive, but I presumed that was the way of veterinary care.
Checkups went perfectly well, the staff is always friendly, and the ambiance is just fine — honestly, I don’t want a vet spending money on a luxe lobby, I want the vets to be highly compensated so the best vets there are are taking care of my puppy.
My two complaints are as follows:
1. When my dog was actually super sick (lethargic, vomiting, shaking, we thought he may have ate something) they gave us two options: admit him to stay overnight and have X-​rays done, or inject him with fluids, take him home, and watch him. We chose the latter hoping we’d never need the former, much more expensive option, and we were made to feel sort of guilty about it. The next morning when we finally did bring him back and admit him, we got a kind of «I told you so,» attitude. They were also sort of morbidly obsessed with getting a lot of money up front — which we gladly paid, but jeez, try not to make it quite so miserly looking. Two days later when they gave us our dog back — nothing found, no answers provides, nothing — they told us these things simply «happen sometimes.» Really?! I get that dogs can’t tell you what’s wrong but $ 1600 later I’d like a little bit more than a brush off.
2. They do not call, email, or otherwise remind you in any way of any services your pet, their patient, requires. When we adopted a 2^nd dog last week, I called immediately to ensure my first dog was good to go. Surprise! He needed bordetella and distemper boosters! Awesome! Needless to say, I had his file transferred (grudgingly I might add) to our new local vet and called it a day.
Honestly, I am willing to spend all the money in the world on my animals — but it needs to be necessary and it needs to be for care worthy of its accompanying price tag.

Definitely a fan. My dog is there right now and they’ve been wonderful. The vet has come to talk to us every time we visit, they’re kind and they’ve been really great about updating us on her condition. Having a pet hospitalized is the worst and they’re doing what they can to make it better.
They’re not our regular or primary vet, but my dog needs ²⁴⁄₇ care right now, and Golf Rose can provide that. On the whole I’m pleased with their sympathy, professionalism, and kindness. I definitely recommend if your pet needs emergency care.

You know what? Having been to a few other vets around Chicagoland, I can’t say I dislike Golf Rose as much as I (thought I) did. Grass is always greener on the other side, huh?
They’re 24-​hours and have always taken care of our pets. Sure, they screw up, some things are expensive, but other places screw up and are even more expensive. We’ve been coming here with our dogs and cats for over 15 years. I’m done trying to find a better patch of grass. Golf Rose is good enough.

This is a great place. When you arrive you are not left in a waiting room, instead you are quickly brought into an exam room so there is little chance of cross contamination with other patients. The staff and vets are very caring they explain everything and make sure you understand all aspects of your pet’s care.
When our new puppy was seriously ill our vet stayed late to follow-​up on the outcome of a series of tests and x-​rays that were needed. We were able to come in anytime 24 hours a day to sit with and hold our ill pup.
We usually see one primary vet but when she isn’t there we have had care from other vets on staff. This attitude of caring pervasive throughout the practice.

It’s taken me a little time to write this review. We were customers of Golf Rose for 6 years, having had our cat examined and treated there. Our cat had long-​term renal problems which we had been treating with subcutaneous fluids and special diet. He lived an additional 3 years on this therapy and seemed happy and content. I provide this context so that you understand that Golf Rose was a partner in the care of our kitty who had a serious medical condition. This will not be a review of «teal walls and formica cabinets». Frankly, who cares. What’s important is the professionalism and the care of the doctors and technicians on staff.
Golf Rose is a large practice. What this means today is a revolving door of veterinarians. This may sound critical but it is a reality in today’s large animal hospitals. If you feel comfortable with a PARTICULAR doctor, you can certainly request that doctor but you will need to be flexible when scheduling appointments. We were very comfortable with ALL of the doctors who treated our cat. They were compassionate, thorough and patiently answered all of our questions. We felt comfortable with their recommendations.
Where I have a problem with Golf Rose is the front office staff. I don’t appreciate being chastised for not calling in advance when I drop in to purchase prescription diet food. It sits on a shelf in the lobby. Another time that I was chastised was when I, once again, dropped in to pick up a drip line and bag of lactated ringers. Again, I didn’t call and heard about it. At my previous vet, this was not required. As a matter of fact, I was always greeted with a «Hi, Mr. S, what can we get for you?»
On other occasions after learning my lesson about calling first, staff promised to call me when my supplies were ready. Twice, I had to follow-​up to make sure the supplies were available. These are minor points but these irritations prevent me from being a ‘fan” and awarding four stars.
When the time came to make our difficult decision, Dr. Kurzeja was very caring and respectful as was the lady at the front desk.
Would we return to Golf Rose when we get a new companion? Probably.

I have been taking my pets to Golf Rose for over 10 years now and even though I’ve moved further away, I appreciate the care that they receive there.
The pluses:
— We’ve always seen Dr. McClure. She’s very caring, very detailed and willing to go the extra step (call back within a day with general questions and ensure we have the answers we need). She’s always been good with our animals and offered suggestions for behavior issues (we had a rescue who had dominance issues)
— No issues with using alternate prescription providers. For quick medications, their pharmacy prices are high, but they are willing to write the prescriptions without issue for 1800petmeds for maintenance meds.
— 24 hour emergency service
— The doctors know their limitiations. We had a dog that required bck surgery and they referred us to Skokie to do the work, rather than take a chance and injure/​kill our dog.
Cons:
— They are defenitely a high priced service. For us, the price balances the fact that if we need to bring our dogs in for emergency (which we have in the past), they have all the records right there waiting for us.
— Not every doctor can be as good as Dr. McClure. We’ve had a few less than stellar experiences with vets there in terms of bedside manner.
