Hurry Curry of Tokyo

I love this place! I’ve already been here several times since their grand opening. I love Japanese curry, and I got super excited when I happened to drive by this place when they were still under construction. I lived in LA before moving to Seattle, so I was excited about a location opening here. I like their Tokyo curry, chicken katsu curry, and their chicken karaage. Their potato croquettes are good too. Their chicken is so tender and flavorful, and they even have chicken karaage curry as an entrée. Yum. And this is a great place if you’re looking for a quick meal. You order, sit down, and the food comes to you really quick!

Just did a pick up order and the portions are too small for the price you pay. I ordered the chicken katsu curry and couldn’t tell if my curry was for the salad or the chicken. Not the traditional Japanese style curry I’m used to. This was very watery and didn’t have much flavor. I was hoping to get that thick saucy goodness I see in the photos. Maybe next time I’ll try the Tokyo curry.
Update: So it turns out my curry WAS missing from my order! So I will be heading back to give it another shot. :)

We used to go to the Pasadena, CA location, and it has been about 10 years since we’ve had Hurry Curry, so I was really looking forward to it. I was not disappointed. I got my old favorite, braised chicken curry on rice. My advice is you pay the extra cost to get the Rakkyo and other pickles. I really love the added crunch/​sweet/​sour of the pickles. I am thrilled they have come to town and am happy to have some Japanese comfort food in town.

Me and my friends came on their opening day and I didn’t expect it to be like a restaurant where you order at the counter. But the service was fast so that’s good. I got the chicken katsu curry with the spaghetti which was pretty yummy. Big portions too. I just think it was a bit pricey for something that could have been a little bit tastier. :x

I love Japanese curry, so I was excited to see this open. The chicken katsu was cooked very well, but the curry sauce did not have much flavor. =/
Definitely over priced for what it is. To me it does not hold a candle to the many fantastic food trucks in the area, most of which are also cheaper.

i’d like to preface this review by saying that i’ve been a loyal customer @ the sawtelle hurry curry location for years. i’ve spent countless weekends drinking lychee martinis and eating tokyo curry with friends and relatives, and have consumed many plates of their delectable chicken pasta as well. my husband (boyfriend at the time) and i would take out katsu curry on a bi-​weekly basis, and i considered this place a staple. imagine how excited we were to see a hurry curry pop up a couple of blocks away from us in seattle!!! we walked by as construction progressed, and excitedly planned to re-​live the curry adventures of our good ol’ days at our good ol’ stomping grounds in west la.
tonight was the night we decided to return to our roots, and we ordered our favorites… 1 order of chicken pasta, and 3 orders of tokyo curry (2 for lunches tomorrow). yes, our expectations were high, but that’s the way we roll… balls to the wall, and headfirst into the hurry curry experience that we know and love.
i do have an understanding of the growing pains new restaurants go through, and having run a food establishment myself, i have an understanding of how hard it is to thrive in SLU (and sawtelle for that matter). i felt compelled to write this review based on the review of the food alone, because quality of food is something that i hold within very strict guardrails.
in comparison to the numerous servings of tokyo curry i’ve had in the past, the one i had tonight was 50% more salty. this is a big deal because the excess salt numbs my palate and makes it hard to distinguish the true flavors of the curry. there was also a thick layer of oil/​grease that i had to drain from all 3 containers of my tokyo curry prior to serving. the spice factor was also an issue. i typically get medium/​hot at the sawtelle location, and ordered the same spice level tonight, however the intensity of the heat was extreme, and combined with the saltiness and oiliness it was bordering on inedible. now, i’m japanese and i’m very used to japanese curry and make it frequently at home. i typically make spicy curry that’s in line with the japanese curries from japan, and none have ever been this extreme in the heat category. i would compare this curry to a thai level of spice, and honestly, i could not finish my meal. lastly, i feel that paying $ 2 for a small container of rakkyo is ridiculous. condiments should automatically be served with the entrée, as it’s an integral part of the dish and not just a garnish. the crunch of the crisp pickled onion mingling with the smooth curry and chewy rice is what the whole experience is about, and must be served correctly.
now, having said all of this, i do plan on going back 2 more times. i’m going to try the chicken katsu curry, and also the croquette curry if they offer it. i know it will take time for the recipes to evolve into consistent offerings, and i have high hopes that it will become a staple once again. i will be revising this review upon my second and then third visit to hurry curry, and although this meal was disappointing, i know that things are still working themselves out, and i trust the owners will hold this location to the highest standards as they do their sawtelle location.

It’s sort of like everything else in that area, it looks good but really it’s not great. It has a fast food vibe, which is perfect for the area. The katsu chicken cutlet (14.25) was good, nice and crispy. The karage (14.25) was terrible. It was like plain steamed chicken in a bowl of curry sauce. Whatever crispy fried outside there was had disappeared by the time we got it. I love katsu and Japanese curry, but I’ll make it at home in the future :)

katsu curry was good, but I was very disappointed with karaage curry and restaurant operation. First of all, they didn’t know how to split the bill so we had to wait for 10 mins until they figured it out. secondly, they forgot my karaage curry order, they finally brought it to our table once I asked them.*phew* but they didn’t bring rice and salad! Unfortunately, they put karaage into curry bowl so all karaage were mushy,. Overall, Katsu curry wasn’t not bad, but I wouldn’t order karaage curry here. They really need to improve customer service and figure out how to operate the restaurant efficiently.

Reminds me of a quick eat and leave type Japanese Style curry joints in Japan. I would say they are a pretty authentic Japanese Curry and Yoshoku restaurant. I had Fried shrimp curry for my Sunday lunch. The dish comes with a small salad. It was good. I enjoyed it. I would have given 4.5 star if I could. I had to take 1 star off since I didn’t see ‘Rakkyo’ (pickled shallots) and ‘Fukujin Zuke’ (Japanese style sweet mixed pickled veggies) the must haves for Japanese style curry. I did enjoy the food without those must have pickles though.
Good came out fairly quick. They are still new and the place wasn’t clouded, so I have nothing to review on the service. The cashier and other staff was nice and friendly.
Next time, I would have to try the Japanese style pasta dishes. They serve Tarako aka pollock roe Pasta
Japanese curry is very different from the ones from Thailand or India. Have an open mind when you try for the first time.

My colleagues and I were super excited to try Hurry Curry of Tokyo, a new lunch spot that recently opened in SLU. All 4 of us made it a point to stop by for team lunch, but all of us left somewhat disappointed.
All of us ordered different dishes, ranging from Katsu curry with rice, curly cheese fries to Waafu pasta and we all found the dishes to be on the expensive side. To be honest, I was sort of shocked that my bill was around $ 19ish when I ordered just Waafu Pasta along with soda as well. When I mentioend to my colleague, he was saying his meal was $ 25+ :D.coz he got katsu curry with rice, cheese fries for our team to share and Capico drink.
Service was pretty meh. One of the guys in our team ordered the curry with higher level of hotness, but they brought out mild curry for him instead (he had to wait to get the right level of curry). My other colleague who also had katsu curry with rice sort of took the fried breading away, eating just the chicken part with the rice. I finished just half of the Waafu pasta, sort of regretted ordering it because the portion was so big, but the taste was somewhat bland and it got meh after a few bites. At least 2 colleagues though complained that the katsu wasn’t exactly hot and was at room temperature… so I felt bad for them.
Maybe it was because it was during the lunch rush or maybe because the place only recently opened up and there were still few things to iron out, but I would probably not plan on stopping by again any time soon… maybe to wait and see if things get better i guess.

I’m so glad we finally have a dedicated Japanese-​style curry place here in SLU! Hurry Curry just opened up in a space under one of the Amazon buildings (Apollo to be exact) and just happens to be really close to where I work. I went in after work for dinner yesterday, and it was pretty quiet. Not surprising since SLU goes a little bit dead after the Amazon hordes flee the area. First I just want to say that the employees were super friendly and enthusiastic, and the whole process from ordering at the counter to getting our food was really streamlined and quick. I had the katsu curry, and my dinner buddy had the tokyo curry. They even gave us a complimentary dish that was kind of chicken karaage-​like with a mayo-​based sauce! It was all really delicious. The katsu was lightly breaded and crisp on the outside and super juicy on the inside, and the curry was on. point. I got the «hot» level of spice and while it is not tears-​in-​your-​eyes status, it was satisfying for me. It was a really satisfying meal overall and while it is definitely more expensive than what it would be in Japan, I’m just glad to have the option. They even have Japanese sodas like Calpico and Ramune, and some Sapporo if you’re into Japanese beer. Really solid spot!

I love it because it’s not too salty but yet flavorful. Chicken katsu is huge and moist but not greasy. Can’t wait to go back!

We knew we were taking a risk by coming on the second day of a restaurant’s opening. There were definitely some kinks in the system, but the food was delicious, which is what matters.
We had the katsu curry and the katsu curry fries with cheese. The katsu was tender and tasty, the curry was incredibly flavorful. I ordered the 3 of 4 stars and it was not overwhelmingly hot at all. The fries seemed like they could have been cooked a little bit longer, but man, Japanese poutine? Pretty damn tasty. Definitely worth checking out when you are craving some Japanese comfort food!

Great new Japanese curry restaurant that opened up. Went on the first opening day so the menu was limited. I tried the Tokyo curry with minced beef, carrot, onion and egg with spaghetti. The flavor of the curry is pretty flavorful and tastes great mixed in with the spaghetti. The chicken karage is tasty with the right texture! Try the chicken katsu. Great meat ratio and quality. There are vegetable add-​ons for $ 1.50 more.

I had the Tokyo Curry with braised beef and extra veggies last night.
It was completely flavorless and bland. There was SOOOO much beef in it I could hardly swallow. Each bite was just beef overload and the texture of it was awful.
I was so excited to try a new place but was severely disappointed.
Thank goodness for the Sapporo, that was on point as always.
I won’t be coming back. It felt like a mall restaurant with no uniqueness or deliciousness.
Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but meh…

The food:
pretty bland… and maybe I just don’t like Japanese Curry? First time trying it… and since it opened in the hood I’ve got to check it out. Tried the Curry no meat with Tofu and extra vegetables (and spaghetti) with a side salad and a beer it was $ 20…and honestly pretty flavorless and 2 stars of spice was like a 0 in the spice rating. I feel I could have made a more flavorful version of this at home for under $ 5.
The Restaurant: Clean and cute seating in the window is nice to look outside.
The Staff: Very friendly offering recommendations.
I will inevitably try it again once they have been open longer.

I was super excited for a Japanese curry spot to open in Seattle but I’m not sure if Hurry Curry will become a go-​to spot unless some changes are made.
The Food
I had the chicken katsu curry and it was ok. The fried chicken cutlet itself wasn’t bad but there wasn’t enough curry. I guess I’m used to huge plates half filled with curry, not a portion of curry that doesn’t even cover the chicken. I’m also used to having the pink, sweet Japanese pickles served with my curry and a runny fried egg would have also been great.
Price
At $ 13 for the katsu curry, it seems a bit on the pricey side for the portion. You have to pay extra to add additional curry, which gets you close to $ 15. Add a drink and you’re talking about dinner prices at a fast casual restaurant.

Considering they’ve only been open for two days and are serving a limited menu, I think they’re gonna do just fine in SLU.
Some co-​workers and I wandered over for lunch right at noon and the place was already running like a well oiled machine. Order at the counter, get a number, snag a table, and you’re eating within 5mins or so.
Most of us went with the chicken katsu curry, which was moist and perfectly fried. Curry is served on the side, along with a small salad, but I wish there had been more curry. One of the best parts about eating curry is drenching everything in it! The chicken karaage and Tokyo curry looked good as well.
I was expecting a thicker Japanese style curry, but Hurry Curry’s version is more like a sauce, and their spice levels are definitely off. I got medium spice and it was really mild, so the mild must be super bland.
Price point is a bit on the high side. $ 13 for the katsu + $ 1.50 for veggie add-​ons, but portions were on the large side. Throw in a drink and you’re looking at $ 15+ for lunch.
Will definitely come back when they have a full menu. I want croquettes!

For being brand spanking new, this place was fantastic!
The restaurant itself looks amazing with a wide open dining area that has a very clean and simple look to it. The lack of excessive décor allows the focus to be on the food and, if what I had tonight was any indication, people will be lining up all hours of the day to get their hands on some of this delicious grub.
I ordered the Wafuu Pasta which is spaghetti with fried Karaage chicken and sautéed vegetables and comes with a side salad and a mayo based white sauce for the chicken, as well as the edamame appetizer and a Calpico Cola.
Everything came out hot and fresh, well prepared, and looked amazing. I was very impressed with the quality and presentation which was especially nice given they have still just barely opened. There was a little confusion at the front counter during the ordering process although that was only due to some first time training so no big deal at all. My only real gripe is that the edamame appetizer came out with the rest of my meal rather than ahead of it but again, no big deal.
I am definitely looking forward to coming back here to try more of their menu and to see if the high standard they have set can be upheld.

Glad to see a Japanese curry house in the area! Great chicken katsu, solid curry. Kitchen also moves pretty quickly for their first day. Chicken katsu curry is $ 13, definitely recommended if its your first Japanese curry.
