History

Established in 2013.

Tango Speed Dating™ will be launched on October 23, 2013 by Argentine Tango teacher and author Gabriela Condrea. Gabriela is a Seattle-​based author who, since releasing her book WHEN 1+1=1: That «Impossible» Connection in 2011, has traveled extensively to teach tango workshops and present her book in Europe, all around North America (70 cities in 34 states), and even in Buenos Aires (where she recently released the Spanish translation of her book). Her experience teaching gymnastics, languages, and writing, and her love for connecting new people are blooming into Tango-​inspired Social Events, including Tango Speed Dating™! She prides herself on making partner dance accessible and easy, emphasizing the connection (Tango is About the Connection) and improvised nature of tango.

Business Owner

Gabriela Condrea — author, teacher, and student of life — was born in Chisinau, Moldova and raised in Seattle, WA. Since discovering tango and falling in love with this social, folk dance, she has begun to split her time between her homes of Seattle and Buenos Aires and travels (2011 Europe Book & Tango Tour, 2012 US/​Canada Book & Tango Tour) to «share» tango and promote her book (When 1+1=1). She is known for her unique connection-​centered, kinesthetic approach to teaching partner dance from the inside, out: Tango is About the Connection.

Gabriela’s fun ice-​breakers are a great idea for speed dating! As a tango dancer who’s never tried speed dating, I was curious to try it. We played fun games and exercises that can be used in learning tango, but are not really tango (this was pretty clear from the description). The games were so much fun! They made us more comfortable around each other, and helped to connect on a level that wouldn’t happen were we just making small talk. The only thing to improve upon is that the group was small, but even then, we all felt like old friends by the end. I think this is a great idea and I would love to see it grow!

I was terrified to try this, but accompanied a friend as a favour. It was a pleasnat afternoon. No, we didn’t meet the men of our dreams, & it was a little awkward, but some very nice men & women attended, we all laughed at ourselves a lot & Gabriela herself was wonderful. Calming, bright, attractive, her exercises (no, it wasn’t actual tango dancing) were designed to build confidence & trust, & it was telling which partners elicited more ease. And the fee included a meal & drink, so that seemed very reasonable (tho I’ve never attended speed-​dating before, but didn’t think they came w/​snacks & beverages).
I took a single beginners tango lesson from her later, so that is somewhat colouring my review. I might give speed dating a 3, because it’s not ‘my scene’, but her tango lesson that other day a 5. And the 2 are intertwined to me, thus my 4 stars.

This event is a super-​fun way to meet people or engage in fun activities with friends you bring with. We engaged in a variety of creative «games» and changed partners frequently. The games seem to only loosely be about tango, with no actual «dancing». What I really enjoyed was the organizer’s relaxed and personable approach to each participant, and her cheerful attitude. She helped all of us to jump in with both feet, which of course is exactly how you can get the most out of an experience.

To begin with, I like speed dating. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s an interesting way to meet new people. If nothing else, it’s a really interesting experience — and I’m all about interesting experiences (get your mind out of the gutter). With that in mind, I went to try Tango Speed Dating.
To be honest, the word «Tango» terrified me. I’m not a dancer, I’ve never taken a dance class, and everything I’ve seen about tango on TV suggests passion and fast moves and lots of (revealing) red clothing.
I was happy to find that the Tango/​dance themed ice breakers did not require me to move my hips in any Ricky Martin-​like fashion. Instead they were easy, respectful dance-​themed activities like guiding my partner around the dance floor while we talked. Pretty simple stuff, but I was surprised how much more comfortable I was with my partner after each game. It was a lot better than just sitting across from them and making small talk.
A plus that the price includes a glass of wine and appetizer.
I was a little confused by some of the other reviews, since it’s clear that this wasn’t a dance class.
–1 star because I can’t say I was hooked and will learn Tango now, but the event itself is fun and the people I met were nice. I’d definitely consider going again.

Very disappointing event. I came here expecting it to be related Tango
and hoping to meet a tango partner, but instead got a ‘chit-​chat’ meetup
with random bar people.
Worst yet, the organizer charged $ 25 (per person) for this event.
Playing retarded games (walking around with your eyes closed), drinking,
and chatting is something you can go do for free.
If that’s how it’s going to be, then make it obvious. Otherwise, you’re
just scamming and wasting the time of people who takes Tango seriously.
