Have been here many times and always enjoy good food and friendly service at a reasonable price!

Don’t be fooled by the looks outside. This is good Mexican food. Stopped in for lunch, mowed through the delicious chips and salsa. That salsa is amazing! Service was adequate, it was surprisingly busy on New Year’s afternoon. My wife had something called a taco bowl with grilled shrimp. OMG! It was hard to believe that’s only 8 bucks! I had a sampler that had just about one of everything. It was amazing! Did I mention we liked the salsa? We wound up buying a jar to take home. We can’t wait to go back!

I keep trying to find decent Mexican food in St. Charles, my quest certainly did not end here. The food and service were terrible. We ordered cheese dip with our salsa that never came. It took several attempts to flag down our waitress to get refills on drinks, which is odd since the entire restaurant is one room. When our food arrived my fajita meat was cold and yet still burnt. After we finished and had to stack our own empty plates in an attempt to receive our check, we finally gave up and went up to the counter to pay, our waitress rang us out and attempted to charge us for the cheese dip we never received !! I certainly did not find the best Mexican food restaurant in St. Charles tonight, but I’m pretty sure I just found the worst…

This is one of the worst Mexican restaurants we have ever been to. The food had NO flavoring and was bland to say the least. The beans weren’t even refried. Just whole beans and they were terrible. We would have had a much better meal for half the price at Taco Bell. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone — ever.

Stopped in by chance and it was a great surprise. The caso dip is addicting. The service was good. A must repeat.

Very good Mexican food. I’m from Texas and appreciate good salsa. The salsa verde and salsa habanero are not to be missed. Prices are extremely reasonable and margaritas not too sweet(which is common in this region) give this place a try, ambiance is a bit lacking(old Pizza Hut converted) but if your looking for good food and great prices you’ll quickly overlook the redecorated Pizza Hut.

I love El Maguey so I hesitated trying this place, but I saw a coupon and decided to try it. It’s a small family run place so I didn’t expect it to look like the cheesecake factory inside(so what if it’s an old pizza hut!) so I won’t take off points for that — it was clean and nice inside and that’s what i care about. The service was great! I couldn’t decide which kind of beans I wanted and the cook heard me asking about them so he brought me up a small plate and let me taste them before I ordered. Then I told the hostess I would be right back and went outside to call my husband. In the 2 minutes I was out there, the hostess actually brought my order out to my car for me. The food was also really good and I thought I got a lot more for my money that I do at El Maguey(I can walk out of El Maguay with a 70 bill if I let the kids order everything they want). Tthe cheese enchiladas tasted identical to El Maguey and they were much bigger, the white cheese sauce was yummy with lots of perfectly cooked chips, and my husband loved the tacos and the borrito. I’ll will definitly be back!

If you like onion fajitas, this is the place for you. When I did find pieces of steak buried in the onions, the meat was tough. I would have ordered a second drink at some point to wash it down, but after delivering my food, the waitress did not return until it was time to deliver the check. A disappointment.

Ugh! Another sub par Mexican restaurant! When I see a restaurant that has converted a gas station or in this instance, and old sit down Pizza Hut to their dining room, it usually raises the red flag. This time I thought I’d be adventurous and visualized myself walking out thinking, «wow! I shouldn’t have judged a book by its cover. This place was awesome!» I judged this book by its cover and my instincts were correct. Like I mentioned, this place is a run down old Pizza Hut dine in. I used to love these places when they were Pizza Hut. I have fond memories of playing sit down table style Pac-Man while waiting for our pizza to come out. That memory is spoiled by a icky Mexican joint. Let me at least give some positives and why it didn’t get one star. Our server was great. She was friendly and attentive. She brought over a dampened napkin because my four year old daughter was being whiny about having sticky fingers and we didn’t even ask her. I really appreciate servers going above what is expected. Now I can get over bad atmosphere and I can get over poor service, but I will not tolerate bad food. I ordered a taco, flauta, and a burrito with beans and rice. I made a mistake and ordered all three with chicken. This has got to be the worst chicken I have had at a restaurant. It had to have come from a can, it had a strange taste to it. But there wasn’t a spec of seasoning on it. Just gross. The flauta tasted like it was deep fried in old oil. I tasted every flauta and chimichanga that has been dropped in that fryer for the last two months. The beans and rice were bland and cold. The burrito was the only thing that was half way decent. I’m not sure when I will learn my lesson and stop going to these Mexican places. La Chavez will be crossed off my list for sure.

Had a wonderful supper with my family. The chicken salad my daughter ordered looked so good and had a generous portion of shredded chicken. Everyone was happy with what we ordered. We had no problem getting a table on Sat night. A large party of 25 were coming in that evening. The waitress remembered my husband and his co-worker from previous visits. If you like Mexican food you should try this restaurant.

Muy delicioso! Husband had the chicken fajitas and loved them. I had the grilled fish tacos and they were seriously some of the best that I have ever had! Huge hunks of fish that were grilled perfectly, cabbage slaw, and la chavez secret sauce which was devine. Just a bit of heat and lots of flavor. This will be our new(returning) go-to restaurant with the family. It was definitely kid friendly. We were a little apprehensive to try it after the fire(at formally El Tio Pepe) because we had loved the previous restaurant, but they just made it BETTER! WAYTOGO!

Wonderful portions for a good price. Quality is not affected by the quantity. I had the burrito with pork and swear it was half a roast. Someone else in our party had the chicken chimichanga and it was full of chicken. When you first arrive you get chips and salsa. You can ask for tomatillo salsa as well as a hotter version of the regular. All good. It is a New Mexican flavor. Not your traditional«st Louis Mexican».

Well, this was unexpected! La Chavez Mexican Grille is trendy, light and fun. It seems like a typical Mexican restaurant from the outside(and this building has housed many of those!), but inside it feels like it belongs on a college campus. The décor is simple, the waitstaff is hip, and the specials are written on a large chalkboard. I had the carne asada special, which was awesome. The beans were the best — they do not do canned refried beans(or canned guacamole) — they are light and fresh. We wondered why we never stopped in before — but we’ll be back!
