History

Established in 1996.

Ride an enclosed tramway gondola from the cruise ship dock in downtown Juneau through the rain forest to the 1,800-foot level of Mount Roberts for one of the most expansive views in Southeast Alaska: Chilkat Mountains to the north, Gastineau Channel to the south, west to Douglas Island, and east into Silver Bow Basin, where gold was discovered in 1880.

Visitors can learn about Tlingit culture through the award-​winning film Seeing Daylight, shown in HD Blu-​Ray every half hour. In addition, Native and historical artwork is displayed indoors and outdoors throughout the complex, and Native artists present frequent live demonstrations with beads, wood, fossilized ivory, silver, garments or dolls and share their cultural stories.

Goldbelt Inc. brought Mark in as the Food & Beverage Manager at the start of the 2012 season. Mark has over 20 years in food & beverage management including: Food & Beverage Director for Harley Hotels (division of Helmsley Hotels), General Manager for Steak & Ale, Olive Garden, and Tony Roma’s and Services Supervisor for Eareckson Air Station on Shemya.

Mark put together an incredible menu for the restaurant with exciting recipes and new flavor sensations for the 2012 season. For the 2013 season, he has designed an all new wedding catering menu that is sure to give the guest attending one of these events the most incredible experience.

The restaurant is also available for regular banquet functions and social events. Mark has the experience and skill to custom make a menu that is sure to please any company or individual choosing to have their event at the top of Mount Roberts.

When you go to Juneau you really need to take the time to go up on the tram and visit Mt. Roberts. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular. There are gift shops up there and a restaurant. Plus they have a couple of shows and some wildlife that cannot be released back into the wild.

Unparalleled views of Gastineau Bay. Be sure and stop in to visit Lady Baltimore, the rescued bald eagle. She is magnificent. Enjoyed the movie as well.

We took the tram to kill time before our whale watching excursion. I only wish we had more time to spend on the trails. There were so many beautiful lookout points and every staff member we met was super friendly. My favorite part was the ride back down. We were the only ones on the tram and the attendant (born and raised in Juneau) told us about each of the memorials in the city. We typically would not pay attention to them but after hearing the history behind each, we visited them and took pictures as they now had more significance.
This would be a great place for a morning or afternoon of hiking.

Beautiful views! We hiked up to the look out point for another vantage point as well (which I’ve heard is often snowed in during May, so I guess we were lucky it was a mild winter). Its a tad pricey, but what tourist activity isn’t? Didn’t watch the movie, but did look at some of the signage and visited the eagle, Lady Baltimore. We also saw eagles in the trees both ways. I recommend waiting to purchase tickets until right when you are going, as if the fog rolls in, its rather pointless to ride to the top and not be able to see down. Them letting you off at a gift shop was annoying, but that is the norm for stuff like this. It took us a bit longer than we expected as there was some waiting involved on both ends (maybe 15 min each way), and we spent a good deal of time at the top, so I’d probably allow at least 2 hours. From what I read online it sounded like the restaurant would be nice, but it had cafeteria type tables & chairs and wasn’t really nice looking (didn’t try it though). It was rainy & windy but we didn’t let that deter us; just wear good foot wear and outer wear. The tram car was swinging quite a bit in the wind at the top, but I felt safe. There was a nice narration from the operator on the way up, but not much on the way down. Thankfully they didn’t overly pack the tram car, and there are windows on every side, so unless you are short and standing in the exact middle, you will have a good view.

I took the tram up the mountin while on a may 2015 cruise ship juneau was our first stop. It was great, the views from the top of the mountain where spectaular. Everyone seemed really friendly and helpful. I paid ten dollars to ride the tram which was great for me. It was so funny, I was waiting to area bald eagle and while I was in the gift shop one flew by the window I was so mad I didn’t have my camera ready but I did get some nice pictures of Lady Baltimore the Eagle. Worth the ride up the mountain. I was also excited because the mountain and I have the same last name. Very informative and friendly.

I hiked the back side of this mount and took the tramway down for free. How? I purchased $ 10 worth of snacks (mostly chocolate) from the store at the top.
The hike up was a blast; perhaps a bit longer than expected as the elevation gain was more than Camelback (for those Arizona folks, you know what I’m comparing).
I would have loved to have stayed longer at the top, but my guaranteed waterproof rain jacket just wasn’t that waterproof, and we were absolutely soaked.
Riding the tram back down was definitely worth the $ 10 in chocolate at the top. The views are pretty spectacular (views that aren’t seen on the hike up the back), and the tram operator was very knowledgeable about the sights. He also made me feel secure about the safety of the tram itself.
Next time I’m in Juneau, I’ll be hiking the back again and riding the tram down. It is definitely worth $ 10 in chocolate.

The tramway ride was great way to view the city. There were several tourists from multiple cruise lines waiting to get on. They packed us in like sardines and made it difficult to get a good look around. The tram ride operator left much to be desired also. He was very vocal about how he“did not like tourists and enjoyed his city streets quiet and empty”! My husband and I were stunned at this young mans attitude and numerous negative comments… After all his job was dependent on tourism. Once was enough for mus.

Mount Roberts Tramway offers a spectacular view of not only the Gastineau Channel, but of Juneau as well… as long as you don’t go up on a cloudy day.
Tickets in general are $ 33/​adult for all day ticket. If you you are on a cruise ship, the price will be the same if purchased through your ship as it is at the ticket office at the tram. If you are up to it, you can take a hike up the mountain and pay $ 10 to ride down or spend $ 10 up at the restaurant to get a lift for free.
The ride itself up to the top is relatively quick, ~5 minutes with two cars running on the line. A word of caution, they will pack the cars to capacity if there are a lot of people, so space can get tight. The ride itself is relatively smooth, with a bit of a bump at the end when you reach the top.
Upon entry, you pretty much walk right by the gift shop filled with gifts you could find in port. If you are looking for a handmade gift and not one that is a «gift from Alaska, but made in China», there is a nice selection in a smaller kind of walled off area in the main gift shop. Downstairs, there is the Chilkat Theater that might have live performances or you can see a brief film on the Tlingit history and culture. There also happens to be a restaurant as well, but I can’t speak to it.
If you venture outside, you can go and visit Liberty Bell in a small enclosure. She happens to be a bald eagle who can’t be re-​released due to injuries she had sustained. There is also a nature center that provides general information about the plants and wildlife in the area, as well as maps if you wish to walk around.
The tram is a good option for someone who isn’t able to go out explore Juneau and the surrounding area or someone who wants to take it nice and easy while in port.

$ 33 for round trip up Mt Roberts
Located on the cruise ship piers before getting into town. It’s a quick 7 minute ride, and very steep.
The pass is good for the entire day if you want to go up and down more than once.

You gotta do it if you’re in Juneau but you’ll be underwhelmed. The ride up can get cramped and the restaurant at the top is hardly worth the ride up. If you have time and stamina for a hike, hike up, enjoy a simple lunch at the restaurant, save your receipt, and take the tram down free of charge.

Worth the money if you have the time to spend up there
In July, we took the tram up — my son wanted to hike up but it was raining — and we really enjoyed the ride and the view. There is an injured bald eagle at the top to see as well as a nature center. While we were looking around at those, the wearer cleared up so we hiked to Father Brown’s cross. IT was a fun hike — wished that we had had more time to keep exploring. The tram ticket is good for all day and you can ride it as much as you want — wish that we had taken a morning ride and then come back later as well. Because we were on a cruise ship, we did not have time to eat up there — wanted to hike instead. We also saw bald eagles in the tree tops on our way down which was cool. Grab a rain jacket and go!

We used our ship credit to get us these tram tickets do we didn’t mind the price. It wouldn’t be worth it if you weren’t going to spend time up there walking around or having lunch.
It’s beautiful up there-​great views and a lot of bald eagles flying around. Pretty cool stuff!
Did I mention the free WIFI?!!
Make sure you have mosquito repellent on! If it’s raining it’s not a big deal but as soon as it stops they start buzzing around.

My wife and I took the Mount Roberts Tramway to the top of Juneau Alaska two weeks ago, and had a wonderful experience. First of all the Tramway ride up the mountain is really breath taking, and once you get to the top, you can look over the entire city of Juneau. A Tram employee tells you some history of the Tram and Juneau on your way up the mountain. There is a small museum and store to visit and you can see a Bald Eagle up close. You can also hike the trails through the forest and also have a wonderful Lunch or Dinner at the Timberline Bar & Grill as you look out of the windows enjoying the great views of Juneau. A great experience for everyone to try on your next visit to Juneau, Alaska.

We enjoyed our visit and ride on the tram, but if I were to go back is probably do it a little differently.
The tram ticket round trip from the bottom is $ 33 per adult, or you can hike up for free and catch a ride down.
It looked like a pretty steep
Hike, but others said they did it in about 40 mins.
From the top, you can ride down for free if you spend $ 10 in the gift shop or restaurant. If I were to go back, I’d hike up and work up an appetite, then do the $ 44 all you can eat crab at the restaurant and then ride down for free :-)

The Mount Roberts Tramway costs $ 32.00 for a ride up the hill and back down. The ride going up is approximately four minutes, and coming down is about three minutes. For the amount paid I personally think is outrageous.
However, the views in the tram is spectacular. You will see the whole Juneau Bay that was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago, and its cruise liners docked around the area.
When on top, there are additional gift stores, a restaurant, a nature center, and there are also hiking trails.
Overall, I love the views and just being around nature. The forest is considered young since its barely a little over half a century old.
I think they should charge so much just for a ride since most people will be spending more money on top. A fair price to go up I think should be $ 16.00 or less.
It seems to be a tourist trap where the actual tourist especially the elders are paying too much for a short ride to the top.
Please have a bigger heart Mr. Tramway and re-​evaluate the cost. Some people may not be able to afford it.

Vale a pena o passeio no bondinho até o alto da montanha. A vista é muito bonita e há trilhas bem sinalizadas. Tem uma estrutura legal que conta com um restaurante, banheiro e duas lojas de souvenir. Aconselho fazer este passeio em primeiro lugar porque o local está mais vazio no início da manhã uma vez que a maior parte das pessoas preferem ir logo à geleira Mendenhall.

So when I got to Juneau I wasn’t expecting to go on the tram because it was so high. When I got inside we paid for the tickets which was a little high but that’s okay because when is the next time I’m going to be in Juneau? There wasn’t that many customers around which kind of worried me but I was alright because I didn’t want anyone to know I was afraid of heights.
So I got on the tram and one of the employees was giving the history on the tram in Juneau and how Mt. Roberts was a gold mine. She also spoke about how there were two different tribes which I think were the Ravens and the Whales I believe. It was really nice to get some history about the area while riding on the tram. So once I got to the top of the trim there was a restaurant a few little shops and this bald eagle name Miss Baltimore.
So I went into the shop which is next to miss Baltimore and the lady took me on the hiking trail. I was very nervous because I did not have a knife or anything to protect me if a bear or any other animal was around. She said that there wasn’t any reports of bears around but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any around. So we went on the trail and I took a few pictures and I really did enjoy being on the trail but I was ready to go back down.
If I come back to Juneau I will definitely come back to Mount Roberts I really had a lot of fun even though I was nervous.

I enjoyed my time on Mt Roberts. The tram is overpriced at 32.00 as a excursion from princess. But what I enjoyed was walking around the mountain. There were lots of great views, trails, snow, creeks and trees. It was so nice to get away from the crowds on the ship. The trails had enough people so it did not get scary. Being new to Alaska I was worried about wildlife. I wish I would of planned ahead so I could have spent more time there.
As a tourist they are always after your money. There is a lame picture taking place. A big restaurant, souvenir shops and a naturalist shop. The trails are the best .
There is no need to buy a ticket from the cruise company. The tram is located (surprise ! surprise ! right at the cruise docks !

Actually hiked up the mountain to avoid tram cost but took the tram down. Took about an hour walk to get to the beginning of the trail and then about another hour to get to the top of the mountain. Steep trail but pretty.
Needed to spend $ 10 each to get a ride back down on the tram so we bought a $ 23 sweater. The awesome cashier gave us a discount. Then you just show your receipt to the Tram operator to get down.
Our tram operator was a jerk and he stuffed as many people into our Tram as possible. People standing in the middle can’t see anything and those by the windows are squished right up to the window.

I really didn’t want to spend $ 31 per person to ride up just to take pics, but my partner insisted and paid. Okay fine, I’ll go.
The ride is about 3 – 5 minutes long each way. The tram operator gave us a monotone spiel about the lift and area, it was pretty funny. Once up there, the views are awesome. It was a clear day so our pics came out great. The gift shop had an end-​of-​season sale with everything 50% off. We checked out the bald eagle that’s in captivity due to its injury. I’ve never seen one up close so that was cool. There are several short hiking trails as well. Our friends stayed for a live performance in the theater by some native tribes which they didn’t care for.
OVERALL:
The pricey tickets are good for the entire day, but I’m not sure why you’d go up and down more than once. The view was awesome but that’s about it.
