«I was working at another shop in Hawaii before I came to San Diego. I came to San Diego in 1986 and there were not a lot of jobs in this county during that time. I went to work in Los Angeles and Orange Country, but it was hard commuting from San Diego since my family was living there during that time. In January of 1988, I started my own business. I started it because I like the satisfaction of customers when they got their cars fixed and running again. I enjoy sharing that satisfaction with clients. So, here I am now, continuing this business for those who need their car fixed.»

Came to get my smog test with no appointment. Lady who appeared to be daughter of owner helped me. Very friendly and got me in and out rather quickly. Took approx 30 mins on a Tuesday morning the day after Memorial Day. I would get smog check here again $ 60. Did find that the Quote on a battery change bought through them was a bit high (labor worked out to be $ 40-​$ 50 per the quote she gave me) if I did my math correctly. If my math was correct I think that was a bit excessive.

Mr Kwon is one of the most sincere and honest mechanics I have ever known. Whenever I have a problem with my car I can leave it with him knowing that whatever is wrong with it he will give me an honest and accurate appraisal and advise me the best course of action to take. He has taken care of my cars for over 20 years, ever since I used him to advise me on a used car I was going to buy and saved me thousands of dollars by pointing out all the problems he found. The car he finally recommended to me went over 10 years without any major problems. I trust him with no reservations.

Went into Kwon’s on a Friday looking to get a smog check. Unfortunately they give their smog guy that day off so they apologized and I went looking for another place to get it done. The next week, I hadn’t gotten around to getting the smog done so I went back to Kwon’s. They got me right in, remembered me from the previous week and gave me an unsolicited 15% discount for the inconvenience. The smog check was super quick even including getting a replacement for a gas cap that had a cracked seal. The staff is super friendly and values their loyal customers.

Update: I will be seeing Kwon (the LIAR) in court soon to recover all my cost to repair his malice done to my Porsche. $ 4,000 parts and labor.

Unethical business. THEY ARE THIEVES. There was nothing wrong with my car — in fact the engine was never worked on. First off, it was a red flag that there were no customers at this shop and the shop down the stress was flooded with customers. The other shop’s smog guy was out so I drove down the street and saw a smog sign. I personally know that besides getting my oil changed, no one has ever done engine work on my car. I was surprised with Kwon told me that my car didn’t pass because of a broken oil dipstick. I could tell the mechanic working there was acting weird around me. Then they went over to show me the break and it looked like it was deliberately broken. KWON BROKE IT. I JUST GOT MY OIL CHANGED BEFORE THIS AND IT WAS FINE. They then told me that it would cost 200 to fix it. I was outraged. I called a different place to ask how much it would be to get something like this fixed and they said $ 40 dollars… Needless to say I still had to pay for the smog check. When I called Kwon’s back to ask if one I have it fixed how much to update the smog and they said $ 50. BEWARE THESE PEOPLE ARE LIARS and THIEVES WILL BE REPORTING TO THE BBB!!!

This place is a fucken joke. I got screw out of 1400 bucks they fucked my exhaust up. I took it in for a smog. The daughter is the Secretary. The techs have hardly any tools. How can my car pass smog with the check engine light comes on. Call me @ 714 905 3587. I plan on sueing these rip off. Call me to come to court. Contact Bbb.

This place is definitely a rip off. My car failed smog here and of course they offered to ‘repair’ it so it passes. I said no thanks and left and had my car pass at another shop down the road, where it passed before. I should have known and read ALL of the reviews about this place.
Called Kwon’s and asked for a refund but they could care less about customer service or fair business practices. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE FOR SMOG!

This is a very very irresponsible station! All they care about is MONEY! I went there to do a smog test this morning, there are two sections of inspection, vision inspection and smoke test. I had a hose cracked in the vision inspection, because of this they failed my result. The thing is they should have stopped right away and let me know I need a replacement. But they only care about is the $ 50, if they did they couldn’t get it.
Yes I think they have the right to do so, just so so irresponsible.
Only thing I can do here is tell you guys my experience, and stay away from this station.

Kwon’s is FANTASTIC!!! I have come here my last two smog checks. My car is getting older and harder to pass, but these guys value the importance of getting your cad good and hot before they test. It is hard finding a good smog place that cares and you can trust. I can now rest easy … at least for another two years. But I’ll be back here again for sure!

Went in because I needed a smog check from a STAR smog station. Usually if you combine STAR and truck/​SUV you end up with $$$, but Kwon charges reasonable prices. I got an extra $ 15 off for my Unilocal check in so it was actually pretty painless. They couldn’t figure out how to enter the coupon code for the check in but gave me the discount anyway. Nice people, yay!

A good salesperson, Mrs. Kwon is. She doesn’t give you much discount, so don’t think you’re getting a special deal. This place did a decent job last time I visited, so I went there again when my car had problems. In retrospect, the auto shop did an okay job. i initially had my car at another auto place, but I got it towed to Kwons because I was promised to get the car done by the end of the day. I went through much trouble getting it towed in the rain and getting a rental car just to get it done by Kwons Auto. It was not worth it; i overestimated their skills, basically.
Eventually, I ended up paying about the same place as the first place I took my car to, and it was more than what I initially thought I would pay. Instead of trying to repair some parts, Kwons Auto replaced most of them. Warranty is short: only 49 days.
Would I go back? Yeah, but not as my first choice auto shop. This place would be my backup auto shop. Did they do a good job? They did okay, and yes, I can trust them. Price? I honestly think they can give customers much better price.

After a service at the Nissan dealership where my car passed the 22 point inspection with no problems, I went to Kwons to have the smog done. $ 40 there is a lot cheaper than $ 70 at the dealership.
The moment they plugged their smog machine into my car it triggered a whole bunch of faults that were not there before so they failed my car through no fault of the car. They cleared the fault, told me to do a drive cycle and come back again for a $ 20 retest. I did this and again, as soon as they plugged their machine in the same faults as previously.
I went straight to Nissan who confirmed that all the faults showing up were induced phantom faults which if true would make the car undriveable.
I called Kwon’s, told them what Nissan said and inquired if they could give me a refund and I would have the smog done at Nissan. They said that if I can show them that the car has passed at Nissan then they would refund. The car passed smog at Nissan and I took the certificate to show Kwons. They refused the refund denying what they told me above.
To top it all, they accused me of lying!

I first want to say that both Kwon and Danny seem like really nice people, and it is not them that this review is about, but rather the business policies which they adhere to on the whole.
I was really REALLY disappointed about the service I recently experienced here when I went to get a smog check. I have a slightly older car that, according to their measurements, did not pass. When I asked them if I was to take the car to my mechanic and get whatever repairs needed to be done, they told me they would charge me a second time! This I thought was strange, and I really should have checked before consenting to have my car smogged, as in most places if your car does not pass, you don’t pay! But Kwon told me that because my car was old it took them so much time (though they had no one else waiting) and that was why they not only charged me $ 10 more, but also couldn’t do my smog the second time for free… unless I let them find the problem, at $ 95 per hour! THIS IS CRAZY! Yes, I should have checked more thoroughly to find out their policies from the beginning but I had heard good things and never though they could be so seedy. And yes, Kwon did ‘let’ me use a coupon so that my smog was normal price instead of the jacked up price, but still… BAD!
Get your car smogged somewhere else! And when you do, make sure to find out their pass or no pay policy.
Oh, and the kicker was, when I took it to another smog place three days later (without getting maintenance), my car passed! BEWARE!
