Description

Specialties

As a certified permaculture designer, I assist homeowners in making the least change for the greatest effect. I particularly enjoy the pruning/care/planting of fruit trees and trees less than 12′. I provide fine gardening services, going beyond the basic «mow&blow» to include aesthetic pruning, hand weeding and mulching. I am an ecological landscaper, using the most environmentally methods to improve your garden. Examples of eco-friendly services include: herbicide-free weed control, lawn conversions via sheetmulching, drought tolerant landscaping using California native plants, rain water harvesting (rain gardens, dry creeks, berms&swales) and electric «mow&blow». I can consult on transformation of an existing landscape or just help with a one time yard clean-up. I pride myself on attention to details and leaving a worksite clean as can be.

History

Established in 2014.

I started Back to the Garden in response to the critical need for more water-wise landscaping due to our severe drought conditions. I use an electric mower and blower to minimize noise and air pollution. I offer herbicide-free weed control via hand weeding and mulching. My experience as a park ranger and CA native plant enthusiast, combined with certifications in permaculture design, Bay Friendly Landscape Design and River Friendly Green Gardener make me an excellent candidate to work with environmentally conscious homeowners. My goals are to reduce the waste of precious water resources, rehabilitate our urban environment and provide a landscape you can be proud of.

Meet the Business Owner

John T.

Business Owner

I have lived in San Mateo County for 40 years. As a County of San Mateo Park Ranger for 16 years, I enjoyed habitat restoration and maintaining trails through grasslands, chaparral, oak woodland, riparian corridors and redwood forest. I gained an understanding of microclimates and the cause/effect of vegetation types. I observed with wonder the evolution and diversity of these ecosystems. This «discovery» of what had been all around me, inspired me to become an avid native plant gardener. An ongoing membership with the California Native Plant Society serves as continuing education, with our local Santa Clara Valley Chapter hosting a series of annual talks on various native garden topics. I found myself wanting to get «Back to the Garden» in early 2014. I am a River Friendly Green Gardener, Bay Friendly Qualified Landscape Designer and earned a certification in Permaculture Design from Occidental Arts and Ecology Center in August 2014.
